Guide To Planning Ecological Townships A Sustainability Performance Indicators And Planning Strategies

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Population pressures and urbanization, together with the challenges of sustainable development, have, in recent decades, led to a proliferation of township developments which are termed 'eco-cities'. These townships seek to attain a wide range of social, economic and environmental sustainability goals. They adopt various quantitative targets or key performance indicators (KPIs) in a bid to substantiate sustainability claims in a number of common themes, for example, energy efficiency, water consumption reduction, public transport planning, waste management, carbon reduction strategies, and biodiversity conservation. They apply ecological principles to guide urban planning, design and management.Given that there are no universal standards, different townships have adopted their own criteria and interpretation on what is to be achieved. This book presents a systematic compilation of sustainability indicators adopted in selected township case studies, with a focus on relatively high density projects in Asia. Using a methodical mode of enquiry, it sets forth a systematic approach towards profiling sustainability performance. In the process, it derives a framework of sustainability domains, performance targets and planning standards which operationalises the concept of sustainability, and lends tangible dimensions to its evaluation. The indicator framework demonstrates the contemporary sustainability considerations that have been embraced by the case studies. They illustrates elements of compact development, social diversity, resource efficiency, economic sufficiency and climate resilience. Planners, designers, developers and their consultants can use the indicator framework to guide project implementation and performance assessment. The methodological structuring of planning parameters lays the foundation for an evolved paradigm in ecological township planning, and a sharpened way of defining the future of human settlements.

A How To Guide On Legislating For An Ecosystem Approach To Fisheries

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The basis of this How-to Guide is the identification of key minimum components for legislating for EAF (17 components that should be included in sector-specific legislation), the operationalization of those key components into concrete drafting steps, and the provision of relevant examples from national legislation, largely from Africa but also from other parts of the world. The review will also provide a synthesis of existing challenges and trends in legislating for EAF. In summary, the How-t o-Guide will assist managers by: • describing the component that should be reflected in legislation; • identifying the specific elements that need to considered in the drafting of legislation; • setting out answers to the questions posed as justification for the relevance or significance of the component; and • outlining the steps to take in drafting, with reference to examples that could provide inspiration.

Berkshire Encyclopedia Of Sustainability 2 10

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The Business of Sustainability is a core resource for policy makers, members of the development community, entrepreneurs, and corporate executives, as well as business and economics students and their professors. It contains rich analysis of how sustainability is being factored into industries across the globe, with enlightening case studies of businesses serving as agents of change. Contributing authors provide a groundbreaking body of research-based knowledge. They explain that the concept of sustainability is being re-framed to be positive about business instead of being tied to the old notion of a trade-off between business and society (that is, if business wins, society and the environment must lose), and they explore how economic development can contribute to building our common future.

Strategic Planning In Local Communities

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This is a comparative international study of the patterns of planning in local governments. While strategic planning has been a field of interest for public management and administrative science for over half a century there are very few cross-national studies of the specifics of planning in local governments. The book analyses the planning activities of local authorities in 7 diverse countries: France, Hungary, Romania, Russia, Spain, Turkey and USA. Although theoretical models of strategic planning are used, the book’s findings point to a very diverse and interesting environment with cultural, political and legal factors playing a significant role in shaping how planning is done in each country.

Making Cities Work

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

For too long, cities have been thought of as environmental blackspots, with high levels of air and soil pollution, overcrowding, poor sanitation and growing waste disposal problems. This book takes a more positive attitude: cities can be made to work sustainably. Their high population density can work in the environment's favour if they can achieve efficient use of resources such as energy and water supplies, and improve transport and infrastructure. The best cities today are clean, resource efficient, green and pleasant, and not only act as cultural and entertainment centres, but also harbour great varieties of wildlife. Making Cities Work looks at the vital role which local authorities can - and must - play in safeguarding and developing our towns and cities. Their role is crucial, and the aim of the book is to make governments, international bodies and local authority associations aware of how potential environmental and social problems can be overcome, and what can be achieved. This book is being written by urban development experts, based on material supplied by the world's leading city associations. It is being edited by one of the world's most highly regarded cultural ecologists, and has been commissioned by UNHCS for the Habitat II conference. Clearly written, accessible, and fully illustrated throughout with photographs, figures and graphs, it is ideal for students, fascinating reading for the general public, and essential for those involved in local authorities, planning and development.

Planning Sustainable Cities

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Current urban planning systems are not equipped to deal with the major urban challenges of the twenty-first century, including effects of climate change, resource depletion and economic instability, plus continued rapid urbanization with its negative consequences such as poverty, slums and urban informality. These planning systems have also, to a large extent, failed to meaningfully involve and accommodate the ways of life of communities and other stakeholders in the planning of urban areas, thus contributing to the problems of spatial marginalization and exclusion. It is clear that urban planning needs to be reconsidered and revitalized for a sustainable urban future. Planning Sustainable Cities reviews the major challenges currently facing cities and towns all over the world, the emergence and spread of modern urban planning and the effectiveness of current approaches. More importantly, it identifies innovative urban planning approaches and practices that are more responsive to current and future challenges of urbanization. The Global Report on Human Settlements is the most authoritative and up-to-date global assessment of human settlements conditions and trends. It is an essential reference for researchers, academics, public authorities and civil society organizations all over the world. Preceding issues of the report have addressed such topics as Cities in a Globalizing World, The Challenge of Slums, Financing Urban Shelter and Enhancing Urban Safety and Security.
