The Hallelujah Effect

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book studies the working efficacy of Leonard Cohen's song Hallelujah in the context of today's network culture. Especially as recorded on YouTube, k.d. lang's interpretation(s) of Cohen's Hallelujah, embody acoustically and visually/viscerally, what Nietzsche named the 'spirit of music'. Today, the working of music is magnified and transformed by recording dynamics and mediated via Facebook exchanges, blog postings and video sites. Given the sexual/religious core of Cohen's Hallelujah, this study poses a phenomenological reading of the objectification of both men and women, raising the question of desire, including gender issues and both homosexual and heterosexual desire. A review of critical thinking about musical performance as 'currency' and consumed commodity takes up Adorno's reading of Benjamin's analysis of the work of art in the age of mechanical reproduction as applied to music/radio/sound and the persistent role of 'recording consciousness'. Ultimately, the question of what Nietzsche called the becoming-human-of-dissonance is explored in terms of both ancient tragedy and Beethoven's striking deployment of dissonance as Nietzsche analyses both as playing with suffering, discontent, and pain itself, a playing for the sake not of language or sense but musically, as joy.

Hallelujah Anyhow

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Hallelujah Anyhow! Have you ever been in a situation when youve felt like there was no way out? Or that your world was crashing down around you? Or how did I get here, and how do I get out? I think that most of us would say that we have been there, done that and somehow managed to overcome the most challenging circumstances. Some people might say it was luck. Some of us, looking on a more spiritual note, will tell you that the Lord carried you through. There are times when my pastor, the Reverend Dr. William F. Baskerville of Mount Mariah Baptist Church, would say, You ought to shout Hallelujah Anyhow! Life is full of changes and experiences. I guess thats what makes life such a beautiful enigma. We are shaped, molded, and cultivated by the apprehension of material things, thoughts, and emotions that we sense. We are human, and we live to experience and adapt through the accumulation of knowledge. In Hallelujah Anyhow we share our tears, our losses, our fears, our truths, and our joys. Lifes trials become lessons and, ultimately, our testimonies. It is our hope that you can connect with what you read and find some joy out of it, and if not, hopefully you find it worthy of a ... Grumble Hallelujah

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

If you had told Caryn Dahlstrand Rivadeneira while she was crying on the kitchen floor that she could find a way to praise God in this situation, she wouldn’t have believed you. In fact, she might have thrown something at you. Looking around at a life that was disappointingly different from what she’d dreamed, she couldn’t imagine honestly singing out a hallelujah. But then it occurred to her that, well, maybe she could manage to grumble one. Have you been there? During life’s lowest moments, it is so tempting to blame ourselves, our circumstances, or God. But what would happen if we turned to God and managed to praise him instead, in whatever way we could? Might he show up and help us find the things in our lives that he made to be loved? Grumble Hallelujah offers humor, candid stories, and solid scriptural backing that will help you see clearly just how your life is meant to be lived—and loved.

Amen Hallelujah

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

In order for twenty-first century readers to properly understand Revelation, we have to look at it through first century eyes. Their understanding of the book frames our understanding. Start with the assumption that the last book of the Bible is exactly what it purports to be - a revelation, not a mystery. Add to that assumption the fact that it was written by a first century author and that it was originally read by first century readers who were expected to understand and obey the message contained in it. Take into consideration their first century frame-of-reference and the authors familiarity with the Old Testament. Wrap that all up in the popular apocalyptic literary genre of its day with its pervasive use of symbolism. That mixture of elements is what gave rise to the Book of Revelation.
