Handbook Of Chemical Synonyms And Trade Names

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

To this Eighth Edition of the late Mr William Gardner‘s Chemical Synonyms and trade Names there have been added some 3,300 new entries, principally in the field of plastics, alloys and pharmaceuticals. A number of entries describing products known to the Editors to be no longer commercially available have been deleted, with the principal object of keeping the bulk of the book within reasonable bounds; but it has been possible to add nearly 400 names to the Index of Manufacturers to be found at the end of the book. The sum of these additions and deletions represents a net increase of about 10 per cent, in the scope of this Eighth Edition as compared with its predecessor published in 1971.

BOOK EXCERPT:

Guide to Trivial Names, Trade Names and Synonyms for Substances Used in Analytical Nomenclature is a list of trivial names, trade names, and synonyms for substances used in analytical chemistry, from acetol and acetylacetone to bromoxine, choline, dithiol, and zincon. This list is intended as a guide to identifying the chemical composition of substances used in analytical nomenclature. Examples of these substances are acetol, whose chemical name is 1-hydroxy-2-propanone and which is synonymous to hydroxyacetone; aspirin (salicylic acid, acetylsalicylic acid); carbazole (carbazole, dibenzopyrrole or diphenylenimine); cetrimide (hexadecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide); chloroxine (5,7-dichloro-8-quinolinol, 5,7-dichloro-8-hydroxyquinoline); cumidine (cumidine, p-isopropylaniline): Dahl acid (6-amino-1-naphthalenesulfonic acid, 2-naphthylamine-5-sulfonic acid); DMG (2,3-butanedione or dioxime, dimethylglyoxime); esculetin (6,7-dihydroxycoumarin, aesculetin); gallic acid (gallic acid, 3,4,5-trihydroxybenzoic acid); glycine (glycine, aminoacetic acid or glycocoll); glyoxaline (imidazole, imidazole); hexone (4-methyl-2-pentanone, isobutyl methyl ketone); isatin (indole-2,3-dione, isatinic acid anhydride); and luminol (5-amino-2,3-dihydro-1,4-phthalazinedione, 2-aminophthaloyl cyclic hydrazide). This monograph will be a useful resource for chemists.

BOOK EXCERPT:

The special world of industrial chemistry is illuminated in this text. Issues such as naming and classification of chemicals, safety, formulations and specifications, information and patents are treated. Process-related topics are discussed, such as scaling-up, equipment selection, construction materials, environmental impact and waste minimization. Aspects which fall in between the traditional disciplines of chemistry and chemical engineering are covered, which are so critical for the development of a successful industrial process, and the awareness of which avoids pitfalls in industrial research and development. Case studies are given, and special appendices provide useful information for the industrial chemist or student. The book is aimed at industrial chemists and engineers, and at students in those faculties, intending to pursue this field in industry. Marketing and purchasing staff will also find this text valuable.
