BOOK EXCERPT:
This authoritative volume brings together established experts to review the theories, research, and treatment methodologies associated with the major cognitive-behavioral models. Unlike other works that approach cognitive-behavioral therapies from the perspective of how to treat different symptoms or disorders, the Handbook first examines the tenets of each theoretical model in depth, and then provides examples of clinical applications. The goal is to provide a solid conceptual framework within which the clinician can make informed choices about which interventions to choose and apply with individual clients. Also addressed are basic principles of cognitive assessment and case formulation, current directions in clinical research, and the role of cognitive-behavioral therapy in the psychotherapy integration movement.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The Oxford Handbook of Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies provides a contemporary and comprehensive illustration of the wide range of evidence-based psychotherapy tools available to both clinicians and researchers. Chapters are written by the most prominent names in cognitive and behavioral theory, assessment, and treatment, and they provide valuable insights concerning the theory, development, and future directions of cognitive and behavioral interventions. Unlike other handbooks that provide a collection of intervention chapters but do not successfully tie these interventions together, the editors have designed a volume that not only takes the reader through underlying theory and philosophies inherent to a cognitive and behavioral approach, but also includes chapters regarding case formulation, requisite professional cognitive and behavioral competencies, and integration of multiculturalism into clinical practice. The Oxford Handbook of Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies clarifies terms present in the literature regarding cognitive and behavioral interventions and reveals the rich variety, similarities, and differences among the large number of cognitive and behavioral interventions that can be applied individually or combined to improve the lives of patients.

This second edition presents updated information and literature to reflect the current clinical guidelines based on research studies that have been published in the past few years. Chapters cover applying CBT to common disorders such as depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and anxiety disorders, as well as more specialized applications such as schizophrenia. Chapters also provide information on how to tailor CBT for specific populations and in specific settings. The book also features new chapters on the use of technology in treating psychiatric disorders and novel models of care and treatments for psychiatric disorders. The fully updated and expanded second edition of The Massachusetts General Hospital Handbook of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy will continue to be a go-to resource for all psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, licensed mental health counselors, primary care doctors, graduate students, and psychiatry residents and fellows implementing cognitive behavioral therapy in their clinical practice.

BOOK EXCERPT:
It is particularly gratifying to prepare a second edition of a book, because there is the necessary impli cation that the first edition was well received. Moreover, now an opportunity is provided to correct the problems or limitations that existed in the first edition as well as to address recent developments in the field. Thus, we are grateful to our friends, colleagues, and students, as well as to the reviewers who have expressed their approval of the first edition and who have given us valuable input on how the revision could best be structured. Perhaps the first thing that the reader will notice about the second edition is that it is more extensive than the first. The volume currently has 41 chapters, in contrast to the 31 chapters that comprised the earlier version. Chapters 3, 9, 29, and 30 of the first edition either have been dropped or were combined, whereas 14 new chapters have been added. In effect, we are gratified in being able to reflect the continued growth of behavior therapy in the 1980s. Behavior therapists have addressed an ever-increasing number of disorders and behavioral dysfunctions in an increasing range of populations. The most notable advances are taking place in such areas as cognitive approaches, geriatrics, and behavioral medicine, and also in the treatment of childhood disorders.
