BOOK EXCERPT:
If you ever wonder why happiness is so elusive, why it doesnt last, why it shows up so sporadically regardless of all you do and of how much you wish to attain it, the good news is that deep and lasting happiness can be yours. Within these pages Monica Belizan shares a clear and enjoyable Program that will lead you to understand what happiness is in all its depth, and, even more importantly, it will teach you how to merge with it and live from it. The Program is deceptively simple. One Principle a week, practiced a few minutes a day, begins the journey to a more peaceful, joyful, creative version of yourself. Each Principle illuminates the path to your true core. And the practices that follow them instill in you new consciously chosen habits that lay down an immutable foundation of happiness in you and your life. You will gain clarity and focus and you will align with your unbreakable essence. Gently but surely you will become freer and freer from desperation, drama and fear, and as you do so, your transformation will ripple out, impacting the life of those close to you and beyond. If you keep an open mind, if you just follow the instructions and commit to the practices, happiness will become the backdrop of all the experiences in your lifeeven when your heart is broken, when someone you love is diagnosed with an incurable illness, when you are alone, when you are broke. You will live with Happiness No Matter What! For more information visit: www.monicabelizan.com

BOOK EXCERPT:
Burn-out and suicide rates among physicians and scientists in academic medicine are at an all-time high and jeopardize the future of our entire profession. In the last 4 years alone, burn-out rates among physicians have increased by 25%. In a recent 2017 Medscape publication, burn-out rates in Critical Care physicians ranked in 9th place and Pediatricians ranked 13th among 27 subspecialties. Astonishingly, over 50% of the participants reported burn-out symptoms, with clear race and gender disparities. While men generally report higher burn-out rates than women, it is important to emphasize that response rates from women in these surveys were notoriously low and may not represent the complete picture. These numbers are even more dismal for tenured academic faculty at research-extensive universities. In this group, emotional exhaustion (i.e. high burn-out) is reported at 35% with a clear association with age and lower burn-out levels in the older tenured faculty. While no gender or racial/ethnic differences were found in this particular group, higher levels of burn-out were identified in individuals with financial responsibilities beyond a spouse and child. While it is comforting to note the increasing public interest and research activities in this field, successful approaches to ameliorate the burden and consequences of physician burn-out are still inadequately developed. Academic centers increasingly offer some type of work-life balance program to their employees but, unfortunately, these programs are frequently adopted from corporate business models and remain largely ineffective in the academic environment. It should be evident to most administrators that the stressors of academic clinicians and scientists substantially differ from those of corporate employees. Based on these observations and over 75 years of combined experience in academic medicine amongst the three editors of this Research Topic, we collected 26 manuscripts from 22 authors at different career stages and different genders, ethnicities, marital status and subspecialties to identify and stratify common and specific stressors and therapeutic approaches to ameliorate burn-out and achieve work-life balance in academic medicine. We are confident that each reader will identify with at least one, if not several, of the authors’ opinions, experiences and approaches to attain greater work-life balance and thereby avoid the consequences of burn-out in modern academic medicine.

BOOK EXCERPT:
As the world observes International Women’s Day on March 8, we zero in on a motley group of women who have emerged as beacons of hope for thousands of others, acting as a formidable force to catalyse some much-needed change. Through their efforts, they have inspired thousands of women around them. Our Cover Story for this edition looks at the work being done by these four women to further female empowerment at the grass-roots community level. India heads to the next general elections for the Lok Sabha soon and there is an unmissable air of anticipation about what has often been described as the biggest festival of democracy in the world. A recent Supreme Court judgement striking down the electoral bonds scheme has, however, turned the spotlight firmly on the issue of funding for political parties. In City Affairs, we take a close look at the scheme and what the Supreme Court verdict means. Amidst all the talk of what it takes to be fit and healthy, we often ignore the importance of getting a good night’s sleep. One only has to look at science to understand the benefits that this brings to a person. Our City Health section brings you a sharp insight into the role sleep plays in our mental as well as physical well- being. As the state tableau rolled down the Kartavya Path during this year’s Republic Day parade in New Delhi, the hearts of Odias across the world swelled with pride as it depicted Odisha’s rich heritage. It went on to win the first prize among tableaus from states and union territories. In CityZen, we feature Kirti Kumar Moharana, the man whose vision shaped this year’s tableau; he talks about what went on behind the scenes and the high points of this endeavour. This Women’s Day, get ready for a film that seeks to decipher the complex expectations from life through the experiences of three individuals navigating difficult, and different, circumstances. ‘Trikanya’ seeks to delve deep into the psyche of these three as they go about realising their unfulfilled dreams and aspirations. Read all about the film in Screen Shots. We also review ‘Mast Mein Rehne Ka’, a film that is as light-hearted as it is meaningful. City Flix brings you all the high points from this offbeat take on life that encapsulates a roller coaster of emotions.
