The Workgroup Human–Computer Interaction & Usability Engineering (HCI&UE) of the Austrian Computer Society (OCG) serves as a platform for interdisciplinary - change, research and development. While human–computer interaction (HCI) tra- tionally brings together psychologists and computer scientists, usability engineering (UE) is a software engineering discipline and ensures the appropriate implementation of applications. Our 2008 topic was Human–Computer Interaction for Education and Work (HCI4EDU), culminating in the 4th annual Usability Symposium USAB 2008 held during November 20–21, 2008 in Graz, Austria (http://usab-symposium.tugraz.at). As with the field of Human–Computer Interaction in Medicine and Health Care (HCI4MED), which was our annual topic in 2007, technological performance also increases exponentially in the area of education and work. Learners, teachers and knowledge workers are ubiquitously confronted with new technologies, which are available at constantly lower costs. However, it is obvious that within our e-Society the knowledge acquired at schools and universities – while being an absolutely necessary basis for learning – may prove insufficient to last a whole life time. Working and learning can be viewed as parallel processes, with the result that li- long learning (LLL) must be considered as more than just a catch phrase within our society, it is an undisputed necessity. Today, we are facing a tremendous increase in educational technologies of all kinds and, although the influence of these new te- nologies is enormous, we must never forget that learning is both a basic cognitive and a social process – and cannot be replaced by technology.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of HCI and Usability for e-Inclusion, held as the 5th Symposium of the Workgroup Human-Computer Interaction and Usability Engineering of the Austrian Computer Society, USAB 2009, in Linz, Austria, in November 2009. The 12 revised full papers and 26 revised short papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 60 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on gender and cognitive performance, usefulness, usability, accessibility, emotion, confidence and elderly, usability testing, evaluation, measurement, education, learning and e-inclusion, design for adaptive content processing, grounded theory, activity theory and situated action, smart home, health and ambient assistent living, user centred design and usability practice, interaction, assistive technologies and virtual environments, communication, interfaces and haptic technology as well as new technologies and challenges for people with disabilities.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-conference proceedings of the Third IFIP WG 13.6 Working Conference on Human Work Interaction Design, HWID 2012, held in Copenhagen, Denmark, in December 2012. The 16 revised papers presented were carefully selected for inclusion in this volume. The papers reflect many different areas and address many complex and diverse work domains, ranging from medical user interfaces, work and speech interactions at elderly care facilities, greenhouse climate control, navigating through large oil industry engineering models, crisis management, library usability, and mobile probing. They have been organized in the following topical sections: work analysis: dimensions and methods; interactions, models and approaches; and evaluations, interactions and applications.

The four-volume set LNCS 10513—10516 constitutes the proceedings of the 16th IFIP TC 13 International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction, INTERACT 2017, held in Mumbai, India, in September 2017. The total of 68 papers presented in these books was carefully reviewed and selected from 221 submissions. The contributions are organized in topical sections named: Part I: adaptive design and mobile applications; aging and disabilities; assistive technology for blind users; audience engagement; co-design studies; cultural differences and communication technology; design rationale and camera-control. This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-conference proceedings of the 4th IFIP WG 13.6 Working Conference on Human Work Interaction Design, HWID 2015, held in London, UK, in June 2015. The 15 revised full papers presented were carefully selected for inclusion in this volume. The papers reflect many different areas and address many complex and diverse work domains, focusing on the integration of work analysis and interaction design methods for pervasive and smart workplaces. They are organized in the following sections: methodologies; environment, and specific contexts.

The 3-volume set LNCS 8510, 8511 and 8512 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 16th International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction, HCII 2014, held in Heraklion, Crete, Greece in June 2014. The total of 1476 papers and 220 posters presented at the HCII 2014 conferences was carefully reviewed and selected from 4766 submissions. These papers address the latest research and development efforts and highlight the human aspects of design and use of computing systems. The papers thoroughly cover the entire field of human-computer interaction, addressing major advances in knowledge and effective use of computers in a variety of application areas.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-conference proceedings of the 6th IFIP WG 13.6 Working Conference on Human Work Interaction Design, HWID 2021, held in Beijing, China, in May, 2021. The 10 revised and extended full papers presented were carefully selected for inclusion in this volume. The papers deal with the analysis and interaction design of a variety of complex work and life contexts found in different business and application domains. They focus on interaction design for work engagement taking usability of interactive systems to the next level by providing employees pleasurable and meaningful experiences via the tools used at work. The papers are organized the following topical sub-headings: Trends in human Work Interaction Design; Workplace & work experience Analysis for Interaction Design; and Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Human Work.

This two-volume set constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 15th International Conference on Universal Access in Human-Computer Interaction, UAHCI 2021, held as part of the 23rd International Conference, HCI International 2021, held as a virtual event, in July 2021. The total of 1276 papers and 241 posters included in the 39 HCII 2021 proceedings volumes was carefully reviewed and selected from 5222 submissions. UAHCI 2021 includes a total of 84 papers; they focus on topics related to universal access methods, techniques and practices, studies on accessibility, design for all, usability, UX and technology acceptance, emotion and behavior recognition for universal access, accessible media, access to learning and education, as well universal access to virtual and intelligent assistive environments.

We will be, sooner or later, not only handling personal computers but also mul- purpose cellular phones, complex personal digital assistants, devices that will be context-aware, and even wearable computers stitched to our clothes...we would like these personal systems to become transparent to the tasks they will be performing. In fact the best interface is an invisible one, one giving the user natural and fast access to the application he (or she) intends to be executed. The working group that organized this conference (the last of a long row!) tried to combine a powerful scientific program (with drastic refereeing) with an entertaining cultural program, so as to make your stay in Rome the most pleasant one all round: I do hope that this expectation becomes true.
