BOOK EXCERPT:
Understanding student and teacher motivation and developing strategies to foster motivation for students at all levels of performance are essential to effective teaching. This text is designed to help prospective and practicing teachers achieve these goals. Its premise is that current research and theory about motivation offer hope and possibilities for educators —teachers, parents, coaches, and administrators—to enhance motivation for achievement. The orientation draws primarily on social-cognitive perspectives that have generated much research relevant to classroom practice. Ideal for any course that is dedicated to, or includes coverage of, motivation and achievement, the text focuses on two key roles teachers play in supporting and cultivating motivation in the classroom: establishing the classroom structure and instruction that provides the environment for optimal motivation, engagement, and learning; and helping students develop the tools that will enable them to be self-regulated learners and develop their potential. Pedagogical features aid the understanding of concepts and the application to practice: Strategy boxes present guidelines and strategies for using the various concepts. Exhibit boxes include forms for different purposes (for example, goal setting), examples of teacher beliefs and practices, and samples of student work. Reflection boxes stimulate readers’ thinking about motivational issues inherent in the topics, their experiences, and their beliefs. A motivational toolbox at the end of each chapter helps readers identify important points to think about, lingering questions, strategies to use now, and strategies to develop in the future. NEW IN THE THIRD EDITION Updated research and new topics are added throughout as warranted by current inquiry in the field. Chapters are reorganized to provide more coherence and to account for new findings. New and updated material is included on issues of educational reform, standards for achievement, and high-stakes testing, and on achievement goal theory, especially regarding performance goals and the distinction between performance-approach and performance-avoidance goals as relevant to classroom practice.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The aim of this volume is to bring together contributions from international research on writing and motivation. It not only addresses the basic question of how motivation to write can be fostered, but also provides analyses of conceptual and theoretical issues at the intersection of the topics of motivation and writing. What emerges from the various chapters is that the motivational aspects of writing represent a rich, productive and partially still unexplored research field. This volume is a step in the direction of a more systematic analysis of the problems as well as an effort to present and compare various models, perspectives and methods of motivation and writing. It addresses the implications of writing instruction based on the 2 main approaches to writing research: cognitive and socio-cultural. It provides systematic analysis of the various models, perspectives, and methods of motivation and writing. It brings together the international research available in this burgeoning field.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The educational system is societys best ally and should not be allowed to break down. Our objective in this study was to identify the causes of high dropout rates and low passion for learning among college students. The common view that students are lazy or lacking interest in education is unfounded. On the contrary, we found that, but for factors beyond their control, most students would work hard to achieve their educational objectives. To avoid the judgmental trap, students were asked to identify the factors that would unlock their passion for learning. The factors identified by the students are analyzed in this book. It is hoped that students, parents, teachers, and school authorities will find this book a light to their path. Udoh Elijah Udom Students lose interest in education and drop out of school for a number of reasons. Dr. Udom rightly turned to us, the students, to find out the factors that would restore our confidence in the education system and make us enroll and remain in school till graduation. I strongly recommend this book to my fellow students. Joseph J. Brown, Student Our school system has experienced dramatic developments in recent decades, including low motivation to learn among college students. Dr. Udoms book highlights the causes of students lack of passion for learning and offers recommendations for a sustainable recruitment and retention of students. This book is one of the best that has been written on this topic and is strongly recommended as a reference material. Dr. William H. Kraus, associate professor, Argosy University, Nashville campus
