When the engine of a 737 tears itself apart at Los Angeles Airport, Tom Patrick is in the wrong place at the wrong time – playing poker at a nearby casino. He’s been losing at cards and probing pipeline leaks ever since his big mouth led to his fall from grace as the National Transportation Safety Board’s top air-crash investigator. Now he can’t wait to come in from the cold. Sidelined by the official investigation, Tom starts to dig anyway. And when another 737 crashes for what looks like similar reasons, it’s clear that something could be terribly wrong with the world’s most popular passenger jet. Risking everything, Tom Patrick sets out on a global paperchase, racing against time and ruthless killers – before planes and people start falling out of the sky like bloody confetti... BRACE YOURSELF FOR HIGH OCTANE, HIGH RISK... HIGH ROLLERS

BOOK EXCERPT:
Tying and rigging lines and leaders Boat-handling tips and approaching and feeding fish From setting the hook to fighting and landing the fish quickly and safely Artist and ardent angler Bill Bishop tackles all aspects of tarpon fishing--from building leaders to bringing them in quickly. Each chapter explores the core aspects of tarpon fishing in detail, including step-by-step instructions for tying IGFA leaders, the nuances of finding, casting to, hooking, and fighting giant tarpon, and insights and tips for running the boat, seeing fish, and reading the fish's behavior. In addition to the technical aspects, Bishop's stories and humor take a look at the personal side of fishing, reminding us that despite the sometimes-serious undertaking of battling a 150-pound tarpon, fishing is still supposed to be fun. With more than 140 detailed pen-and-ink illustrations and photos by Mark Hatter, this book will help anyone who wants to hook, and land, more silver kings.

This edition of T Bandits: The High Rollers features snippets in Italian. If you enjoy reading tech thrillers or 'triller tecnologici' in Italian, this story will give you some practice in lateral thinking; reading by alternating between English and Italian―a good exercise vouched by polyglots. The snippets are scattered but follow the same format to reduce distractions, and to keep up with the flow and for you to be able to 'make the connection' paragraph by paragraph. Please note that this story is for intermediate readers. SYNOPSIS Welcome to the hidden society of elite Bitcoin and Forex traders. From chat rooms to posh hotels around the world. The only thing missing was a Bitcoin museum on the outskirts of New York City, which would explain a lot. But alas, we will have to settle for these chronicles instead.

Crown Resorts, the Bond Group, James Hardie, HIH Insurance, Geoffrey Edelsten’s Allied Medical Group, 7-Eleven and Rio Tinto, the list goes on… Australia has suffered from the continual sting of business scandals since corporate cowboys like Alan Bond and Christopher Skase wrought so much damage during the 1980s. Since then, hundreds of thousands of Australians have been affected, with many left traumatised when corporations collapse due to gross mismanagement and profits being put before people. Award-winning author Quentin Beresford takes us inside corporate Australia’s highest-profile scandals and the factors that drive them — the rise of celebrity CEOs, timid regulators, inept boards, the murky links between big business, governments, banks, media and lobby groups — and explores a path towards higher ethical standards from organisations. It’s a wild ride into the heart of corporate Australia. ‘There have been too many Australian corporate scandals to keep up with in recent years, which makes Rogue Corporations so compelling — Quentin Beresford ties them all together in a powerful narrative.’ — Stephen Mayne, journalist, publisher, shareholder activist and founder of Crikey, the online newspaper

BOOK EXCERPT:
As every American knows, our nation's favorite pastime is also big business. The last fifteen years have been exceptionally good to the business of baseball-with the growth in fan attendance, the spread of cable television, the burgeoning interest in cards and other baseball memorabilia, the historical appreciation of franchise values, the emergence of a powerful players' union, and average salaries that are almost twenty times their pre-1976 levels. Yet at this time of prosperity, major economic issues trouble the sport: the threat of franchise relocation, the continual flash points in collective bargaining, the growing commercialization of the game, the club owners' collusive response to free agency, lingering concerns of race discrimination, and the arguably tenuous link between player pay and performance. This fascinating book examines these and other major issues and assesses their probable impact on the business of baseball. Contributors begin by examining the effect of the reserve clause on competitive league balance. They then investigate whether prior experience with the salary arbitration process affects player demands in subsequent settlements and compare salary differences between ineligible and arbitration-eligible players. They consider the role of the baseball fan as contributor to team winning, as season ticket purchase, and as card-collecting hobbyist. Diamonds Are Forever also looks at the link between player pay and performance. The authors question whether such high salaries are actually earned by players or are instead awarded by owners eager to have "the winning team." They also discuss the growth in unequal distribution of salaries among players. In the last section, the authors look at racial discrimination in baseball and the influence of a team's racial composition on salaries. From Babe Ruth to Nolan Ryan, Doubleday to Skydome, baseball cards to Homer Hankies, the nation has been enthralled for decades with the business of baseball. Although the authors look to the future and consider changes that might occur in this profitable pastime, they assure that diamonds are forever.
