High Temperature Plasmas

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Filling the gap for a treatment of the subject as an advanced course in theoretical physics with a huge potential for future applications, this monograph discusses aspects of these applications and provides theoretical methods and tools for their investigation. Throughout this coherent and up-to-date work the main emphasis is on classical plasmas at high-temperatures, drawing on the experienced author's specialist background. As such, it covers the key areas of magnetic fusion plasma, laser-plasma-interaction and astrophysical plasmas, while also including nonlinear waves and phenomena. For master and PhD students as well as researchers interested in the theoretical foundations of plasma models.

Physics Of High Temperature Plasmas

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Physics of High Temperature Plasmas, Second Edition focuses on plasma physics and the advances in this field. This book explores the experimental observations on linear waves and instabilities. Comprised of 11 chapters, this edition begins with an overview of heat transition as a result of the heating of a solid or liquid substance. This book then examines the behavior of plasmas, which has great significance for the understanding of our universe. This text also investigates the possible application of plasmas, such as the application of hot plasma as thermonuclear fuel. Other chapters discuss the laws of plasma physics, with emphasis on those phenomena that are relevant to the operation of thermonuclear machines. This text discusses as well the electromagnetic forces on an earthly scale, the quantum effects, particle collisions, and Maxwell's equation. The final chapter of the book deals with the motion of charged particles. This book is intended for researchers engaged in plasma research and graduate students taking a course in plasma physics.

Particle Interactions In High Temperature Plasmas

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This thesis makes two important contributions to plasma physics. The first is the extension of the seminal theoretical works of Spitzer and Braginskii, which describe the basics of particle interactions in plasma, to relativistic systems. Relativistic plasmas have long been studied in high-energy astrophysics and are becoming increasingly attainable in the laboratory. The second is the design of a new class of photon–photon collider, which is the first capable of detecting the Breit–Wheeler process. Though it offers the simplest way for light to be converted into matter, the process has never been detected in the 80 years since its theoretical prediction. The experimental scheme proposed here exploits the radiation used in inertial confinement fusion experiments and could in principle be implemented in one of several current-generation facilities.

Thermodynamic Diagrams For High Temperature Plasmas Of Air Air Carbon Carbon Hydrogen Mixtures And Argon

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Thermodynamic Diagrams for High Temperature Plasmas of Air, Air-Carbon, Carbon-Hydrogen Mixtures, and Argon provides information relating to the properties of equilibrium gas plasmas formed from hydrocarbons, from air without argon, from pure argon, and from mixtures of air and carbon at various compositions, temperatures and pressures. The data are presented in graphical rather than tabular form to provide a clearer picture of the plasma processes investigated. This book is composed of four chapters, and begins with the introduction to the characteristics of plasmas, with emphasis on their thermodynamic properties. The succeeding chapter deals with the theoretical basis of the computations of thermodynamic properties using a system of equations derived from quantized Boltzmann statistics. These topics are followed by discussions on the calculation of equilibrium compositions and the thermodynamic values for thermal plasmas. The final chapter describes proposed models on which the calculations are based. This book will prove useful to chemical technologists and researchers.

Plasmas At High Temperature And Density

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

"New physics" is an appealing new keyword, not yet devalued by the ravages of inflation. But what has this to do with such an ugly field as plasma physics, steeped in classical physics, mostly outworn, with all its unsolved and ambiguous technological problems and its messy and open ended numerical studies? "New physics" is concerned with quarks, Higgs particles, grand unified theory, super strings, gravitational waves, and the profound basics of cosmology and black holes. It is the field of astonishing quantum effects, demonstrated by the von Klitzing effect and high temperature superconductors. But what can plasma physicists offer, after so many years of expensive and frustrating research to solve the problem of fusion energy? One may suggest that the fascinating research ofchaos with applications to plasma, or the achievements of statistical mechanics applied to plasmas, has something to offer and should be the subject of attention. However, this is not the aim of this book. Complementing the traditional aim of physics, which is to interpret the phenomena of nature by generalizing laws such that exact predictions about new properties and effects can be drawn, this book demonstrates how new physics has been derived over the last 30 years from the state of matter which exists at high temperatures (plasma).

High Temperature Dust Laden Jets In Plasma Technology

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The demand of industry for new composite and functional materials with preset properties has led to increased investigations into processes which occur in plasma jets of complex chemical composition with an additive to disperse particles as well as at their interaction with hard surfaces under the conditions of superfast cooling of the particles which are in complex aggregation state. This Proceedings Volume contains the papers that were presented during the International Workshop ''High-Temperature Dust-Laden Jets in the Processes of Treatment of Powder Materials'', held in Novosibirsk, USSR, 6--8 September 1988. The scope of the Workshop incorporated the following topics: -- Modelling of the processes of interphase momentum, heat and mass transfer in dust-laden plasma jets as well as interaction between the particles which are in complex aggregation state and the base. -- Diagnostics of the parameters of gas disperse phases in high-temperature dust-laden flows. -- Processes of the formation of plasma sprayed coatings. -- Processes of treatment and production of powder materials.
