In And Out Of The Ivory Tower The Autobiography Of William L Langer

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

“Straightforward, relaxed memoirs by the prodigiously industrious and learned Harvard diplomatic historian and head of the Research and Analysis Section of OSS... Fine reading for anyone interested in academic life and in the connections between scholarship and policy in foreign affairs.” — Gaddis Smith, Foreign Affairs “William L. Langer intended this autobiography as an exemplary tale of how a poor boy from an immigrant family made good in America... Langer’s autobiography provides clues to his patriotic identification with the establishment and to the prodigious energy and intelligence that produced his historical works.” — Dorothy Ross, The American Historical Review “[T]his informal, modest, and understated volume will please and inform both those who knew the author personally and those who knew him only through his publications... As a historian, Langer defies categorization... he explored new areas and new techniques for research — regional studies, demography, disease, and psychoanalysis. His autobiography is neither a full description nor critical appraisal of the profession, but it should convey to a younger generation the historian’s search for truth, his pride in craftsmanship, and his sense of social responsibility.” — Richard W. Leopold, The Journal of American History

Thanks A Lot Mr Kibblewhite

BOOK EXCERPT:

The frontman of one of the greatest bands of all time tells the story of his rise from nothing to rock 'n' roll megastar, and his wild journey as the voice of The Who. “It’s taken me three years to unpack the events of my life, to remember who did what when and why, to separate the myths from the reality, to unravel what really happened at the Holiday Inn on Keith Moon’s 21st birthday,” says Roger Daltrey, the powerhouse vocalist of The Who. The result of this introspection is a remarkable memoir, instantly captivating, funny and frank, chock-full of well-earned wisdom and one-of-a-kind anecdotes from a raucous life that spans a tumultuous time of change in Britain and America. Born during the air bombing of London in 1944, Daltrey fought his way (literally) through school and poverty and began to assemble the band that would become The Who while working at a sheet metal factory in 1961. In Daltrey’s voice, the familiar stories—how they got into smashing up their kit, the infighting, Keith Moon’s antics—take on a new, intimate life. Also here is the creative journey through the unforgettable hits including My Generation, Substitute, Pinball Wizard, and the great albums, Who’s Next, Tommy, and Quadrophenia. Amidst all the music and mayhem, the drugs, the premature deaths, the ruined hotel rooms, Roger is our perfect narrator, remaining sober (relatively) and observant and determined to make The Who bigger and bigger. Not only his personal story, this is the definitive biography of The Who.

Ordinary Dogs

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Eileen Battersby is the chief literature critic of The Irish Times and is, in the words of John Banville, 'the finest fiction critic we have'. But her first full-length book is not about international literature or the state of the novel. It is about dogs. Two dogs in particular, with the unlikely names of Bilbo and Frodo. She adopted the first from a horrible dog pound, and the second decided he liked her and moved in to join the family. She was in her very early twenties, an intensely serious student and runner who had just moved to Ireland from California. The dogs became her most loyal companions for over twenty years, witnesses to an often difficult human life and more important to her than most other humans. This book is about two animals with personalities, emotions and prejudices. It is unlike any other book ever written about dogs. It is not sentimental or twee. Battersby became intimately involved in the lives of these intelligent, shrewd creatures, and brings them to life with rare passion and insight. She writes honestly and movingly about the reasons why, for certain people - especially women - there is more integrity in the mysterious relationship with a mammal who cannot speak than there is in most of the relationships that human society has to offer.

Reconnected

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Fragmented memories, flashbacks, emotional reactivity and somatic complaints are common features in the lives of trauma survivors. These symptoms often leave one feeling disconnected and alone. Sexual assault trauma leaves scars that frequently go unseen by the general public. The effects, however, are lasting for the survivor and frequently impact a person's ability to engage fully in life and to navigate intimate relationships with ease. Recovery from such experiences is challenging. I sought treatment for two decades before stumbling upon a treatment approach that worked - pelvic floor physiotherapy! In my experience it was through this unconventional treatment approach that I was able to completely resolve all the post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms I had lived with for decades. This book is unique in that it details the ingredients that went into enabling my recovery. In my experience it was a combination of the physiotherapist's person-centred skills together with the muscle release approach we adopted that enabled success. Reconnected offers hope to survivors. It is written as a mix of a personal story, combined with the many therapeutic approaches I tried prior to discovering the physiotherapy approach that worked. The neuroscience explaining how and why trauma can be treated through the body already exists. This research has been incorporated in the book to explain the success of the approach described. This makes it appealing to academics, healthcare professionals and people with experiences similar to my own. To my knowledge very few people recover completely from the effects of complex trauma. It is exciting to find a treatment approach that not only works but is a first of its kind in treating trauma of this nature in this way.
