This book is a critical study of the interaction between the Russian Church and society in the late 19th and early 20th century. This volume explores the churches of Ukraine and their involvement in the recent movement for social justice and dignity within the country. In November of 2013, citizens of Ukraine gathered on Kyiv's central square (Maidan) to protest against a government that had reneged on its promise to sign a trade agreement with Europe. The Euromaidan protest included members of various Christian churches in Ukraine, who stood together and demanded government accountability and closer ties with Europe. In response, state forces massacred over one hundred unarmed civilians. The atrocity precipitated a rapid sequence of events: the president fled the country, a provisional government was put in place, and Russia annexed Crimea and intervened militarily in eastern Ukraine. An examination of Ukrainian churches’ involvement in this protest and the fall-out that it inspired opens up other questions and discussions about the churches’ identity and role in the country’s culture and its social and political history. Volume contributors examine Ukrainian churches’ historical development and singularity; their quest for autonomy; their active involvement in identity formation; their interpretations of the war and its causes; and the paths they have charted toward peace and unity.

Even where state borders are porous, where commerce, culture, and trade as well as associative, personal, and social life display stronger liminal traits, normative education remains surprisingly national. This situation is remarkable and goes against the grain of current notions of both accelerating globalisation and a European regional renaissance. The book also takes issue with the foundational tenet that liberal democracies are by definition uninvolved in matters concerning faith and belief. Instead, an implied conclusion is that secular liberal democracy is less than secular and liberal - at least in education, which is a major arena for political-cultural-ethical socialisation, as it aims to confer worldviews and frameworks of identity on young people who will eventually become full citizens and bearers/sharers of prevailing normative communities.

The key question asked in this book is, how did Stalinist war cinema present Soviet women's resistance against the Nazi forces during World War II? This book challenges those scholarly works which support the idea of the compatibility of femininity and combat under Stalinism. Despite the Soviet regime’s claim of being opposed to any religious heritage, this book reveals how Stalinist cinema drew on Russian religious tradition and culture in the creation of cinematic representations of Soviet women during WWII. Further, the book shows how the adoption of Russian cultural and religious heritage in Soviet war cinema served Stalinist collective identity-construction policies and state-citizen relations. In so doing, this study contributes to a range of fields within Russian and Soviet studies, including gender studies, cinema studies, Soviet modernity, and the study of identity-construction and state-nation relations.
