BOOK EXCERPT:
This book provides a concise, up-to-date overview on homonymous visual field defects, and especially homonymous hemianopia. All aspects of the subject are covered, from anatomy and pathophysiology to diagnosis and management. Emphasis is placed on practical issues and major advances in ophthalmology, neurology, imaging techniques, and psychology. Rehabilitation strategies are described, and methods supporting compensation strategies are recommended. A separate chapter considers driving with homonymous hemianopia, which represents one of the critical issues in traffic ophthalmology. This book will be of particular value to ophthalmologists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, and neuroscientists. It will be an invaluable asset in diagnostic and treatment decision making in patients with homonymous visual field defects, which are the most frequent type of visual field deficit after acquired unilateral postchiasmal brain damage.

Section 3 discusses ocular motor abnormalities, including infranuclear ocular motor disorders; nuclear, internuclear, and supranuclear ocular motor disorders; nystagmus and saccadic intrusions; disorders of higher gaze control; and normal and abnormal lid function. Section 4 covers disorders of the pupil; neuro-ophthalmology of orbital disease; and functional neuro-ophthalmology. This book will be useful to early-stage physicians, as well as specialists interested in the latest developments in neuro-ophthalmology. - A comprehensive resource that explores the innovative methods used to understand the visual system - An in-depth study of how the brain processes vision, and the role certain functions such as eye movement play in visual diagnosis and memory - Clinical and laboratory methods of evaluation that are perfect for physicians and specialists in any stage of practice

Thoroughly revised and updated for its Sixth Edition, this classic work is the most comprehensive reference on diagnosis and treatment of neuro-ophthalmologic diseases. This edition has two new editors—Valérie Biousse, MD and John B. Kerrison, MD—and has been streamlined from five volumes into three tightly edited volumes with a sharper focus on patient management. Coverage includes major updates on genetics of diseases, new diagnostic techniques, and the newest treatment options. This first volume covers the visual sensory system, the autonomic nervous system, the ocular motor system, the eyelid, facial pain and headache, and nonorganic disease. Volume 2 covers tumors, the phacomatoses, and vascular disease. Volume 3 covers degenerative, metabolic, infectious, inflammatory, and demyelinating diseases.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The second edition of this introductory text uses clinical examples to bridge the gap between basic neuroscience and the practice of neurologic rehabilitation. Each chapter illustrates the relationship between the nervous system and behavior. Current, portable, and clearly written, the text covers discrete systems for acquiring information, the neural mechanisms that control specific kinds of human function, and how the nervous system responds to insult and injury. New in this edition: Neurotransmitters, support structures and blood supply, sensorimotor interaction, and aging of the nervous system.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Field Guide to the Neurologic Examination provides a detailed review of the basic neurologic exam, giving clinicians the tools needed to obtain valuable diagnostic information and address specific clinical presentations. The guide's three sections include a brief overview of neurologic diagnosis, instructions on how to perform the basic components of the neurologic exam, and ways to tailor the exam to specific clinical situations. The clinical focus assists in the practical bedside evaluation of common neurologic symptoms. Also included is a concise appendix of common neurologic tests, with brief summaries to help clinicians choose the best approach for each patient.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Part of the "What Do I Do Now?" series, Neuro-Ophthalmology uses a case-based approach to cover common and important topics in the examination, investigation, and management of afferent visual, efferent eye movement, eyelid, pupil, and orbital disorders. Each chapter provides a discussion of the diagnosis, key points to remember, and selected references for further reading. For this new edition, all cases and references have been updated and new cases have been added, including neuroretinitis, autosomal dominant optic atrophy, carotid-cavernous fistula, and more. Neuro-Ophthalmology is an engaging collection of thought-provoking cases which clinicians can utilize when they encounter difficult patients. The volume is also a self-assessment tool that tests the reader's ability to answer the question, "What do I do now?"

BOOK EXCERPT:
Stroke Rehabilitation: Insights from Neuroscience and Imaging informs and challenges neurologists, rehabilitation therapists, imagers, and stroke specialists to adopt more restorative and scientific approaches to stroke rehabilitation based on new evidence from neuroscience and neuroimaging literatures. The fields of cognitive neuroscience and neuroimaging are advancing rapidly and providing new insights into human behavior and learning. Similarly, improved knowledge of how the brain processes information after injury and recovers over time is providing new perspectives on what can be achieved through rehabilitation. Stroke Rehabilitation explores the potential to shape and maximize neural plastic changes in the brain after stroke from a multimodal perspective. Active skill based learning is identified as a central element of a restorative approach to rehabilitation. The evidence behind core learning principles as well as specific learning strategies that have been applied to retrain lost functions of movement, sensation, cognition and language are also discussed. Current interventions are evaluated relative to this knowledge base and examples are given of how active learning principles have been successfully applied in specific interventions. The benefits and evidence behind enriched environments is reviewed with examples of potential application in stroke rehabilitation. The capacity of adjunctive therapies, such as transcranial magnetic stimulation, to modulate receptivity of the damaged brain to benefit from behavioral interventions is also discussed in the context of this multimodal approach. Focusing on new insights from neuroscience and imaging, the book explores the potential to tailor interventions to the individual based on viable brain networks. This book is intended for clinicians, rehabilitation specialists and neurologists who are interested in using these new discoveries to achieve more optimal outcomes. Equally as important, it is intended for neuroscientists, clinical researchers, and imaging specialists to help frame important clinical questions and to better understand the context in which their discoveries may be used.
