BOOK EXCERPT:
Honeycomb Technology is a guide to honeycomb cores and honeycomb sandwich panels, from the manufacturing methods by which they are produced, to the different types of design, applications for usage and methods of testing the materials. It explains the different types of honeycomb cores available and provides tabulated data of their properties. The author has been involved in the testing and design of honeycomb cores and sandwich panels for nearly 30 years. Honeycomb Technology reflects this by emphasizing a `hands-on' approach and discusses procedures for designing sandwich panels, explaining the necessary equations. Also included is a section on how to design honeycomb energy absorbers and one full chapter discussing honeycomb core and sandwich panel testing. Honeycomb Technology will be of interest to engineers in the aircraft, aerospace and building industries. It will also be of great use to engineering students interested in basic sandwich panel design.

BOOK EXCERPT:
When Nat, her best friend Jess and singing-star wannabe Harper sing together, their harmonies bring down the house. For Nat, the experience sparks a driving new desire to perform. But when the girls form a trio and enter a contest for a chance to play at the Tall Grass Music Festival, Nat finds that harmony—musical and otherwise—is hard to maintain. Her bandmates almost never agree, her new boyfriend starts behaving more like a non-boyfriend, and the trio’s famous-musician mentor doesn’t even like the way Nat breathes. Every day, Nat’s dream of performing at Tall Grass seems farther away, and she questions whether she has what it takes to get there.

An astonishing, richly interwoven story from #1 bestselling author Joanne M. Harris (The Gospel of Loki, Chocolat), beautifully illustrated by the multiple award-winning Charles Vess (Stardust, The Books of Earthsea). Long ago and far away, Far away and long ago, The World was honeycomb, we know, The Worlds were honeycomb. The beauty of stories is that you never know where they will take you. BOOK EXCERPT:
As cities grow, land becomes scarcer and dearer. In Malaysia, terrace houses in the cities and suburbs are already out of the financial reach of most people. They must make do with high-rise housing, but even these are increasingly expensive. With increasing prosperity, car-ownership spirals, congesting main arteries, dominating neighbourhood streets and discouraging other activities - walking, cycling, children’s outdoor play, and casual social interaction – making low-rise neighbourhoods less vibrant. As for high-rise housing, it has always been associated with social ills. Is this trend of homes becoming less affordable and neighbourhoods becoming more sterile inevitable? Are there any design alternatives to terrace houses and high-rise blocks that can make housing socially better and affordable? This book offers the optimistic prospect that courtyard homes - with private and shared gardens in front of them – can create an environment is that more community-friendly. That these courtyard neighbourhoods can be created in both low-rise as well as high-rise situations. That these houses and neighbourhoods can be designed in a cost-efficient way so that these courtyard homes can be affordable to as many as possible. Pie in the sky? Not quite… Several affordable low-rise projects have already been completed or are in the pipeline. We are also working to commercialize our R&D that extend the ideas first developed for low-rise to various types of high-rise housing projects.
