Recent Advances In Pediatrics Volume 20 Hot Topics

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This is the 20th Annual volume of the noted international series, Recent Advances in Pediatrics. The series has the distinction of uninterrupted appearance ever since 1990-91 when the it was launched . To date, over and above the 20 Annual volumes, the series has to its credit 21 special volumes on various subspecialities in pediatrics. The present volume aims at covering the currently outstanding hot topics in pediatrics of special relevance to resource-limited countries .The approach is multidisciplinary with an eye on future. The 33 peer-reviewed, evidence-based and state-of-the-art chapters contributed by as many as 46 experts drawn from India and other countries provide depth and breadth of the expanding knowledge in the field of contemporary pediatrics. Also incorporated along with the recent and current advances is the time-honored art of pediatric practice as and when applicable. The treatise presents threadbare discussions on a plethora of hot topics ranging from nanomedicine, community care of the newborn, respiratory distress syndrome and neonatal cholestasis, through non-Hodkin lymphoma, and febrile and transient neutropenia, to pediatric emergencies and blood component therapy. Overviews on two offbeat topics, “Epigenetics” and “Translational Medicine and Research” provide a refreshing flavor of the advances that are set to make strides in the near future. Each and every chapter is remarkable by its excellence, providing a stimulating and, not infrequently, even provocative, mature and informal update. Today, such an approach is considered the backbone for information, motivation of discussion, interaction, research and innovation.

Current Topics In Management 2002

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This annual series presents fundamental research on the theory and practice of management. Volume 7 contains articles presented at the 2001 meeting of the International Conferences on Advances in Management (ICAM), held in Athens, Greece. ICAM's goal is to be truly comparative-in terms of the broad scope of management perspectives, in the broad-ranging locations of its research as well as its application, and in its comparisons of findings, methodologies, and operational definitions. This volume exemplifies ICAM's objectives. Part 1, "Organization Theory, Learning, and Effectiveness," revisits the management theory jungle, reports on the development organizational learning capabilities in Europe, encourages organizational learning through cultural diversity, and reviews the role of corporate parent . Part 2, "Behavior and Attitudes in Organizations," considers the relationships of religion to organizational citizenship and whistle-blowing behaviors, identifies antecedents of misbehavior among nurses and social welfare workers, and uses process framework as a method to depict encroaching processes and change in organizations. Part 3, "International and Cross-Cultural Management," looks at various issues of management abroad. Topics include the dimensions and levels of power bases and their relationships to subordinates' compliance and satisfaction in the U.S. and South Korea, the relationship between empowerment and quality of work life in Mexico, and case studies of organizational intellectual capital in China. Part 4, "Management in the Public Sector," turns attention to efforts to recognize and build on differences in public administration. Part 5, "Managing Human Resources," addresses the nature of researcher values in human resource management and considers recent publications in mainstream human resources in order to isolate the patterns of research. Part 6, "Role of Research in Management," discusses the need for processual thinking. It presents a list of factors contrasting two views of management: the classical view, and the "process view of management." This volume will be of particular interest to corporate executives, economists, and labor studies specialists. M. Afzalur Rahim is founding editor of the International Journal of Organizational Analysis and International Journal of Conflict Management, and is professor of management at Western Kentucky University. Robert T. Golembiewski is distinguished research professor at the University of Georgia, and has authored or edited over seventy-five books. Kenneth D. Mackenzie is the Edmund P. Learned Distinguished Professor and president of Mackenzie and Company. He has published numerous articles in scholarly journals and several books.

BOOK EXCERPT:

Breast cancer continues to be a major problem. In Volume 1 of this series we dealt exclusively with topics concerned with therapy. In Volume 2 we explored various aspects of experimental biology which are critical to our developing better methods of diagnosis and treatment. In the pres ent volume, we tum to a series of individual topics of considerable interest, including systemic methods for hormonal ablation, screening for early cancer, male breast cancer, and more. The first chapter addresses the question of why some breast tumors metastasize and others do not. Based on elegant animal tumor models, Kim believes that metastasizing tumor cells are the undesirable by product of the host immune surveillance mechanism. Unstable mem brane structures lead to shedding of membrane constituents, abnormal locomotive properties, and evasion of the host defense system. Factors which alter membrane structure will therefore have to be considered in our approach to the management of early breast cancer.

Current Topics In Cellular Regulation

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Current Topics in Cellular Regulation: Volume 28 is a collection of papers that deals with enzyme-enzyme interactions, regulation of metabolic reaction pathways, the relevance of intracellular amino acid pool in the regulation of protein metabolism, and the production of superoxide by phagocytic leukocytes. Other papers discuss the regulation of adrenergic receptor function by phosphyrylation, a membrane-bound metallo-endopeptidase (meprin), as well as the covalent modification as a mechanism of marking proteins for degradation. One paper notes that the transfer pathway involving enzyme-enzyme recognition is associated with molecular specificity features over those demanded by the molecular structural constraints of the individual enzyme sites. The Albery and Knowles principle, under certain conditions, shows that intermediary metabolites within a particular pathway exist in states of nearly equal free energy. One paper describes that the amino acid pool size and content are governed by the conditioning of intracellular proteins and the metabolic activity of the cell. The paper also suggests that intracellular pools do not regulate protein metabolism. The collection can prove beneficial for biochemists, micro-biologists, cellular researchers, and academicians involved in the study of cellular biology or physiology.

Current Topics In Bioenergetics

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Current Topics in Bioenergetics, Volume 5 provides information pertinent to the molecular properties of purified enzymes and defined reactions. This book presents the development in the research on oxidative phosphorylation. Organized into nine chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the contributions to the knowledge of membrane structure based on X-ray diffraction analysis. This text then examines the reactions of chlorophyll in model systems and the luminescence linked with light absorptions, which relate to the early events in photosynthesis. Other chapters relate spectroscopic and EPR measurements to redox changes linked with energy coupling in the mitochondrial electron carriers. This book discusses as well the role of soluble proteins in the energy transfer process of oxidative phosphorylation. The final chapter deals with the chemical and structural properties of the photoreceptors in the visual process. This book is a valuable resource for biophysicists, physiologists, biologists, biochemists, physical chemists, and research workers.
