How Immigrants Contribute to South Africa’s Economy is the result of a project carried out by the OECD Development Centre and the International Labour Organization, with support from the European Union.

This open access Regional Reader proposes new ways of theorizing migration in Southern Africa by arguing that traditional western forms of theorizing do not adequately fit the South-South migration context. It explores the existing definitions of a ‘migrant’ with a view to conceptualise a definition which will speak to the complexities, envisioning a more inclusive Southern African region. The book investigates the various levels of migration moving from the local (rural to urban and urban to rural) to cross border migration; middle-class versus working-class migrant household livelihoods; livelihoods procurement versus wage earning; social capital (networks) and how they make meaning of their circumstances in a ‘foreign’ space. It also acknowledges the intertwined issues of gender and class as important in analyzing migration processes and the chapters feature both in varying dimensions. As such, the book provides a great resource for students, academics and policy makers.

By the end of 2020, the number of forcibly displaced people globally had reached 82.4 million as a result of persecution, conflict, violence, human rights violations and events seriously disturbing public order (UNHCR, 2021). Efforts to prevent these people from crossing national boundaries have resulted in draconian legislation and the vilification of migrants at various international borders. In the Mediterranean, at the border with ‘fortress Europe’, there have been thousands of fatalities as migrants risk the treacherous crossing in tiny boats. The so-called ‘weaponization of migration’ is apparent in recent events on the Polish-Belarussian border as hundreds of asylum seekers are trapped between rival forces of armed soldiers. Under the UK government's 'hostile environment' policy, many legal immigration routes have been closed, and the rights of asylum seekers have been severely curtailed. The so-called 'migrant caravan', which began in Honduras in October 2018, prompted the US and Mexican governments to deploy active-duty military officers to the border, creating more chaos in the area.

The purpose of this edited book is to look at work and migration from multiple viewpoints and illuminate challenges faced by immigrants in the labour markets around the world. It takes an approach that listens to the voices of different migrant groups in different countries, based mostly on qualitative research. In addition to the main themes of discussion centred on labour markets, this book also makes reference to a wide range of discussion topics which often intersect with employment, labour markets and the work experience of migrants. These include themes such as migrant integration, remittance transfers, relations established and maintained with home countries, legal and institutional arrangements and policy making processes in the host countries, through the concepts of employment and work. This dynamic Companion explores the connections - and disconnections - between migration and sustainable development as articulated by the UN’s Agenda 2030 and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Providing a critical appraisal of Agenda 2030, it examines the extent to which the SDGs encompass migration and migrant-related experiences within the context of the pledge to ‘leave no-one behind’.

Human movement has an influence on the socio-economic dynamics of people, regions, and countries. The schisms between host and immigrants impact how host countries utilize immigrant skills and expertise to benefit their economies. However, immigrants are impacted by negative diplomatic relations between countries that limit the free movement of people and the welfare of immigrants. In association, this brings about social challenges such as Afrophobia, racism, xenophobia, hatred, and violence within these countries. While these challenges are deeply rooted across the world, Africa has its own unique challenges. Still struggling with massive underdevelopment, Africa needs to remove all the negative factors that could impede its quest of achieving development imperatives. Impact of Immigration and Xenophobia on Development in Africa analyzes the genesis and evolution of immigration in Africa and how this has resulted in social challenges such as xenophobia within the continent. The book focuses on demonstrating how immigrant skills and expertise can be positively utilized to assist African development and asserts the existence of xenophobia in respective countries does not assist Africa’s quest of resolving its own challenges. The chapters within this book therefore explore how this subsequent output of xenophobia has impacted African development and focuses on the revival of Pan-Africanism as a uniting instrument and ideology for Africans. This book is a valuable reference tool for activists, retired and practicing politicians, governments, policymakers, practitioners, stakeholders, researchers, students, and academicians.

Research on local administration responsiveness towards migrant’s and non-citizens revealed that demographic characteristics in local municipalities have often caused challenges for local administrations to be responsive to the diverse needs of their communities (Lucio et.al., 2013, Lucio, 2016). The objective of this study was to explore the conditions that impact on the local administration’s responsiveness work to migrants in Durban, Cape Town & Johannesburg metropolitan municipalities of South Africa. The study’s goal is met by identifying five major conditions that impact the local administration’s responsiveness work to migrants in the study areas. Conducted in two rounds field research, the study used qualitative research design methods. Semistructured interviews, group discussions, field memos and observations were used to collect data. Thematic analysis method was implemented to investigate and analyze the collected raw data. This dissertation also used relevant theory as framework and guide to uncover elements of local administrative responsiveness which are associated with migrants. The study identified and demonstrated that five major conditions impact the local administration’s responsiveness work to migrants in the study areas. Local administration work environment, administration organizational structure and professionalism, external control from elected officials and local politics, migrant’s community association, and economic contribution of migrants are the main conditions that impact on the responsiveness work of the local administration. The findings also showed that, anchored in the above five conditions, administrative responsiveness also varies across the selected study areas. This study also contributed by adding new insights about the mechanisms on how the local administration can address the issues of migrants who do not have a direct representation in the local government structure. Accordingly, for a better responsiveness work to migrants and to support the inclusion of migrants who do not have a direct political representation, the study proposes recommendation for policy, practice and research that targets on local administration responsiveness work to migrants.

Interrogating Xenophobia and Nativism in Twenty-First-Century Africa interrogates xenophobia and nativism in Africa and how they hamper the realisation of Pan-Africanism. The contributors examine migration in Africa, immigration policies and politics, and the social impacts and history of xenophobia and nativism in African life and culture. Through their analyses, the contributors explore how xenophobia and nativism have impacted the Pan-Africanism movement. The book also offers suggestions for reducing xenophobia and nativism in Africa, including bettering immigration policies and creating socioeconomic structures that would enrich the public and help prevent the pervasive belief that immigrants usurp limited opportunities for the poor in the countries they immigrate to.
