Chains Of Finance

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Investment is no longer a matter of individual savers directly choosing which shares or bonds to buy. Rather, most of their money flows through a 'chain': an often extended sequence of intermediaries. What goes on in that chain is of huge importance: The world's investment managers, who are now almost as well paid as top bankers, control assets equivalent in value to around a year of total global economic output. In Chains of Finance, five social scientists discuss the ways in which the intermediaries in the chain influence each other, channel the flows of savers' money, enhance investment decisions, and form audiences for each other's performances of financially competent selves. The central argument of the book is that investment management is fashioned profoundly by the opportunities and constraints this chain creates. Whether chains constrain or enable, however, they always entangle, tying intermediaries to each other - silently and profoundly shaping the investment management industry. Chains of Finance is a novel analysis that will make students, social scientists, financial professionals, and regulators looking at the workings of financial markets in a new light. A must-read for anyone looking for insights into the decision-making processes of investment managers and those influenced by and working for them.

Human Investment Management

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book presents a thought-provoking case for looking at human resource management from an entirely different perspective. In the modern world, organizations have to optimally manage resources to achieve the best results, and the best way to do this is to identify humans as instruments of investment and not as resources. Humans use resources in an activity. Managing people, as a subject, was first studied as part of personnel management, and became known as human resource management (HRM) in the early 80s. However, the basic principles remained largely unchanged. The book argues that it is time that HRM is replaced by human investment management (HIM), where the entire approach of employee management in an organization shifts gears to human investment in activities. In this approach no human is considered bad in relation to an organization, if selected appropriately, and trained well. Everyone is productive, though the returns may differ. Humans can be invested in areas where they are best or can be trained to be the best according to various factors. Unlike any other investment instruments, humans' value can be continuously upgraded for higher returns. Thus the core of HIM is to maximize the return from each employee as an individual or as a member of the group with minimum expenditure and effort in him or her. HIM can therefore reengineer and replace HRM slowly and steadily at the desired pace where maximum attention is paid to employee investment for improved results. This is unlike HRM, which primarily focuses on employee relations. Turning around HRM to HIM will be the first step in inclusively aligning strategic human resource management with the overall human management. As such, HIM should be seen as a process by which the asset or capital value of individual humans can be increased by turning them into capital humans, an entirely different outlook from the oft-used term human capital.

Revisiting National Security

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book examines the evolving concept of national security and how human systems could be governed in an ever turbulent and dynamic world. It takes a revised look at the concept of national security, previously researched and identified by the author, based on the present context but with a futuristic appreciation of governance, primarily national but extended to global perspectives, in the modern and dynamically shifting world. The book emphasises the need for governments to maximise national security for the well-being of their people. The concept of national security is taken as the key subject of national governance which is extendable to global governance wherein national security is not only the physical or military security alone but also the overall well-being of the people of a nation. This book explores how national security can be achieved by balancing its various elements in different terrains where the game of governance is played in national as well as global perspective. It also presents additional findings and observations to show that the approach is transformative, redefining the key knowledge paradigms. This book is relevant for policy makers, students, researchers and academics who wish to explore and rethink their approach towards governing the human systems, whose well-being is the responsibility of governments.

The Human Capital Imperative

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

"Alan Coppin is a rare individual. His experience and insight span private and public sectors, charities, and the Armed Forces. The vital importance of human capital is the thread which has bound all this together. His book is a rich gold mine of data, research, wisdom and anecdote." —Sir Gerry Grimstone, chairman of Standard Life, deputy chairman of Barclays, non-executive director of Deloitte and lead non-executive director at the Ministry of Defence In this new book Alan Coppin, a leader with extensive cross-sector experience, draws on discussions with leaders in the public and private sectors, as well as from charities, the military and trade unions to offer you the ideas and practical applications that have proved effective in ensuring human capital is properly valued and managed. Most business decisions are based on lag data – historical reporting of what happened last month, last quarter or last year. It’s solid, real and comforting. Unfortunately, it’s also not a very good indicator of what might happen next. The best lead data – information with genuine predictive power – comes from understanding your people and what they can deliver. All major organizations claim that people are their greatest asset and yet, at the first sign of problems, the first action they take is to fire people. Why, because employees are also an organisation’s biggest liability in terms of cost – and their cost is much easier to quantify than their value. But, like any asset, human capital will only deliver its full value if it is properly understood, measured and managed. The author offers you the tools you need to take the issue beyond the HR department and satisfy the number crunchers in the boardroom. With their help, you can make human capital part of the normal financial metrics essential to running a successful organisation. Isn’t it time you understood and managed the metrics that can predict your organization’s future rather than relying on those that simply report on its past?
