This book demonstrates the benefits of applying a new interdisciplinary approach that combines global change and human mobility. The term "globility" was coined in the year 2000 when the commission with the same name was created by the International Geographical Union with the purpose of theorizing about and asserting the concept of human mobility. First the book offers theoretical reviews of human mobility. Then it proceeds to study patterns of mobility in today's world as it faces new challenges in migration policies (including border controls, management of refugee movements, social initiatives to empower unauthorized immigrants), the integration issue, environmental hazards, and so on. The response to these diverse challenges reveals an increasing fluidity of human mobility and new forms of engagement of people on the move. Readers will obtain a better understanding of current human mobility from a large number of regions and from different thematic perspectives.

Modern transportation allows people, animals, and plants-and the pathogens they carry-to travel more easily than ever before. The ease and speed of travel, tourism, and international trade connect once-remote areas with one another, eliminating many of the geographic and cultural barriers that once limited the spread of disease. Because of our global interconnectedness through transportation, tourism and trade, infectious diseases emerge more frequently; spread greater distances; pass more easily between humans and animals; and evolve into new and more virulent strains. The IOM's Forum on Microbial Threats hosted the workshop "Globalization, Movement of Pathogens (and Their Hosts) and the Revised International Health Regulations" December 16-17, 2008 in order to explore issues related to infectious disease spread in a "borderless" world. Participants discussed the global emergence, establishment, and surveillance of infectious diseases; the complex relationship between travel, trade, tourism, and the spread of infectious diseases; national and international policies for mitigating disease movement locally and globally; and obstacles and opportunities for detecting and containing these potentially wide-reaching and devastating diseases. This document summarizes the workshop.

This book identifies and discusses research directions, challenges and achievements in contemporary geography. It also documents the most current theoretical and methodological considerations undertaken by scientists representing various sub-disciplines of geography with particular reference to human geography. It was assumed that the thematic structure of the currently active International Geographical Union (IGU) problem commissions corresponds to the most relevant and current research directions in geography. Reflecting this assumption, the book consists of 14 chapters contributed by geographers representing 14 problem commissions of the IGU, which allows us to examine geography from different perspectives and to provide the reader with a complete overview of contemporary research issues in human geography. The first part discusses contemporary research problems and issues related to scientific methodology and achievements of selected geographical sub-disciplines, including urban geography, agricultural geography, transport geography, and political geography, among others. The second part focuses on the interdisciplinarity of geography and the topics of global dimension undertaken by geographers such as global change, GIS and geospatial technology, marginalization, and environmental change. This part also discusses the internal relations between geographical specializations and their links with other related sciences, including geology, sociology, and economics. The third part discusses the holistic approaches of geography applied to particular regions, territories, or conditions (Africa, costal systems, geomorphology and local development).

This study, which brings together and consolidates the research work of the interdisciplinary EMHAM group, is focused on the relationship among human mobility, healthcare and fairness in public healthcare and treatment. The investigation of the information produced by the Emergency Departments of the Rome Metropolitan Area has proved to be strategic in identifying the healthcare needs of foreign populations. Many of the dynamics concerning migrants can be traced back to the inappropriateness of visits and accesses to the Emergency Departments. This information, together with the result of dynamic evaluations and assessments, is useful not only for healthcare issues, but also for the demographic, socio-political and economic characterisation of the phenomenon of human mobility.

The broad aim of this book is to examine human mobility-urbanization relationships as the unit of analysis within the framework of the natural environment of the coastal areas with a focus on unfolding major conflict categories/themes. The book does not address the question of how urbanization shapes mobility: this lies outside the project specification that this book is based on, as approved by the EU. Therefore, the analysis of how different urban forms, such as the compact city, shape mobility are not considered here. Instead, the book has four specific research objectives that structure this overview chapter and the national case studies presented in the remainder of the book. I. To analyze the relationships between migration and urban change. II. To analyze the spatial and temporal balance between permanent versus temporary populations in the core v ring v coastal zone. III. To analyse how human mobility shapes key aspects of urbanization. IV. To consider the main human-environmental conflicts resulting from human mobility. The final section reflects on the implications for human-environmental conflicts of the changing relationship between mobility and urbanization in the case studies.

While mobility trajectories and experiences are key in migrants’ lives, they are relatively neglected in the field of migration studies. Using mobility as a unique angle of approach, the Handbook of Human Mobility and Migration is a pioneering assessment of the theoretical concerns, empirical questions and issues of governance surrounding international mobility and migration today.

The optimism heralded by the end of the Cold War and the idea of an emerging borderless world was soon shadowed by conflicts, wars, terrorism, and new border walls. Migrants, asylum seekers, and refugees have simultaneously become key political figures. Border and mobility studies are now two sides of the same coin. The chapters of this volume reflect the changing relations between borders, bordering practices, and mobilities. They provide both theoretical insights and contextual knowledge on how borders, bordering practices, and ethical issues come together in mobilities. The chapters scrutinize how bounded (territorial) and open/networked (relational) spaces manifest in various contexts. The first section, ‘Borders in a borderless world’, raises theoretical questions. The second, ‘Politics of inclusion and exclusion’, looks at bordering practices in the context of migration. The third section, ‘Contested mobilities and encounters’, focuses on tourism, which has been an ‘accepted’ form of mobility but which has recently become an object of critique because of overtourism. Section four, ‘Borders, security, politics’, examines bordering practices and security in the EU and beyond, highlighting how the migration/border politics nexus has become a national and supra-national political challenge. The chapters of this interdisciplinary volume contribute both conceptually and empirically to understanding contemporary bordering practices and mobilities. It is essential reading for geographers, political scientists, sociologists, and international relations scholars interested in the contemporary meanings of borders and mobilities.

This book addresses tourism and its development in the post-communist context of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). Although it has been over 30 years since many countries of Central and Eastern Europe embarked on the path of transition from state socialism to capitalism and liberal democracy, the ongoing atrocious events in Ukraine bluntly remind us that the perception of CEE as a ‘transition’ region may have been done away with too early and that the legacies of communism continue to influence the reality of the region. Tourism is no exception here. While on the one hand, tourism has significantly contributed to the post-communist restructuring of CEE, on the other, the communist heritage has played (and still plays) an important role in shaping the tourism geographies of the CEE region. The book consists of 14 chapters (divided into two sections), a new introduction and a reflective concluding section. All 14 main chapters in this book were originally published in the Tourism Geographies journal. The aim of the book is two-fold. First, it summarises, distils and highlights the important and often ground-breaking contributions Tourism Geographies has made over the years to the debate on tourism in CEE. Second, it lays foundations for further research on tourism in the post-communist states of CEE.
