This book argues that human rights cannot go global without going local. This important lesson from the winding debates on universalism and particularism raises intricate questions: what are human rights after all, given the dissent surrounding their foundations, content, and scope? What are legitimate deviances from classical human rights (law) and where should we draw “red lines”? Making a case for balancing conceptual openness and distinctness, this book addresses the key human rights issues of our time and opens up novel spaces for deliberation. It engages philosophical reasoning with law, politics, and religion and demonstrates that a meaningful relativist account of human rights is not only possible, but a sorely needed antidote to dogmatism and polarization.

Ideas in History 6, no. 1 is an open issue—though its pieces lay emphasis on the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The articles in this issue emphasize intersections between culture, morality and politics. Mikkel Thorup investigates genealogies of radical terrorist philosophy and practice. Ben Dorfman looks into plays of historical thought in human rights, and the problem of alienation in both human rights and philosophy of history. Benjamin C. This volume offers a new dimension to realist theories about world politics. It questions both the theoretical and empirical foundations of much of traditional realist thought by offering realist-oriented analyses that emphasize the possibilities of cooperation and accommodation through agreement over common motivations and concerns. The articles in this volume demonstrate that moral considerations can and do play a significant role in shaping state behavior and that despair about the possibility of improving the systems and institutions within which we live is unwarranted. Specific points of normative convergence are raised in some detail, especially on issues of war, membership and authority, humanitarian concern and the social consequences of globalization. Three ethical concepts form the core of the 'realism reconsidered' argued for here, namely, the ideas of pluralism, rights and fairness.

Over sixty years after the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, it has been widely observed that human rights resonate differently in various settings. This book addresses the timely and important question of how to understand human rights in a world of increasing diversity. The effects of globalization and the increasing mobility of persons and peoples have further deepened and multiplied the sites of interaction between different cultures, religions and ethnicities. These changes have been a source of enrichment, as multiculturalism, interculturalism and diversity permeate our daily lives. Yet, they have also revealed important societal cleavages, different conceptualizations of human rights, and divergent values and beliefs about moral, ethical, cultural and religious issues. In societies characterized by diverse social, ethnic, religious and cultural communities, it becomes critical to examine how to reconcile the tensions between respect for group-based identities and differences, the robust protections of individual rights and freedoms, and the maintenance of community solidarity and social cohesion. It is these tensions, mediated through debates about the interaction between human rights and diversity, that this book addresses. Eschewing any simple reconciliation of human rights and universalism, this book aspires to identify alternative frameworks that can facilitate the conceptualization of, and help find solutions to, the complex global human rights issues in diverse societies. In engaging with both the theoretical perspectives that question the 'universality' of human rights as well as assessing the practicality of diverse applications of human rights, this collection of essays explores how human rights can be employed to empower historically excluded and marginalized groups. Taking diversity into account in thinking about the universal aspirations of human rights protection requires us to reframe the question. Rather than asking whether human rights are universal, we need to ask how the universal principles underlying human rights are practically and tangibly realized in diverse contexts and communities. The Chinese Yearbook of Human Rights is a forum for academic exchange between China and the international community in the field of human rights. It publishes peer reviewed articles by scholars and practitioners from both within and outside China on human rights issues, from the perspectives of law, philosophy, political science, history, international relations and other relevant academic disciplines. The Yearbook was originally founded in cooperation with the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law, and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, but fell silent from 2008 onwards. It now has a new editorial team, consisting of internationally based human rights scholars and a team of editors at the Institute for Human Rights of the China University of Political Science and Law and the Center for Human Rights Studies of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. Volume 5, 2023, is the result of that cooperation and focuses on the topical issue of international standards and international monitoring procedures, including historical evolution, current interpretation and application, the monitoring work by both treaty- and Charter-based bodies, and directions for future developments.
