BOOK EXCERPT:
"The study of western racism has tended to concentrate either on the hatred and murder of Jews or the hatred and enslavement of black people. As chief objects of racism Jews and Blacks have been linked together for centuries, peoples apart from the general run of humanity. In medieval Europe Jews were often perceived as Blacks, and the conflation of Jews and Blacks continued throughout the period of the Enlightenment. With the discovery of a community of Black Jews in Loango in west Africa in 1777, and later of black Jews in India, the Middle East and other parts of Africa, the figure of the hybrid black Jew was thrust into the maelstrom of evolving theories about race hierarchies and taxonomies. The new hybrid played a particular role in the great battle between monogenists and polygenists as they sought to establish the unitary or disparate origins of humankind. From the mid-nineteenth century to the period of the Third Reich Jews and Blacks were increasingly conflated in a racist discourse which combined the two fundamental racial hatreds of the west. While Hitler considered Jews 'Negroid parasites', in Nazi Germany as in Fascist Italy, through texts, laws and cartoons, Jews and Blacks were combined in the figure of the Black/Jew, the mortal foe of the Aryan race"--

BOOK EXCERPT:
Why can't we talk about antisemitism? 'I am so grateful to Rachel Shabi for this supple, generous and original investigation into the uses and abuses of antisemitism... I cannot wait for Off-White to be read, debated and put into practice.' Naomi Klein, author of Doppelganger As claims of antisemitism continue to distort our politics at home and abroad, it has become almost impossible to talk about constructively, even in private. Instead, we find ourselves in a storm of misinformation, political mudslinging and bad-faith accusations. There is, however, a way to deliberate more honestly. Looking beyond our polarising headlines and interrogating the reasons racism takes hold, Off-White offers urgent analysis of one of the most divisive issues of our time. Taking in the contingency of whiteness, Judeo-Christian mythmaking, pro-Israel antisemitism, and the Palestinian struggle against colonialism, Rachel Shabi lights a hopeful way forward. *** 'A masterpiece defined by moral clarity, humanity and insight.' Owen Jones 'An invaluable guide for anyone who seeks to understand issues over which we stumble far too often' George Monbiot 'With a generous spirit and a humane compass, Rachel Shabi guides us through a minefield.' Gary Younge

BOOK EXCERPT:
The twenty-two essays in this collection examine a wide scope of past and present cultural interrelations and interdependences in the Americas. Exploring mutual gazes, separations, and linkages, this volume highlights regional, national, and transnational contacts in the New World; it raises awareness of the contrasts that separate American cultures; and it examines the confluences of New World issues, traditions, and practices. Contributing to the emerging field of Inter-American Studies, this collection increases our theoretical understanding of cultural hybridity and demonstrates that cultural hybridity is by no means a recent phenomenon in the Americas.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This volume shows the formidable range of variation in youth language. Youth language is analyzed as a phenomenon in negotiations of identities and social relations. The contributions particularly concentrate on youth language in late modern urban societies. This is an area of study which has been gaining increasing attention in sociolinguistics over the past few years. One observation that is almost inevitable is that there is a string of similarities to be found between youths in quite different circumstances, ranging from university students in Argentina, to juvenile delinquents in Greece and to skaters in Greenland. A wide range of language situations are covered, from Danish, Cypriot Greek, Turkish, to Spanish, Greenlandic, Norwegian, Catalan, and of course English. The articles in this anthology document and analyze linguistic youth styles and behaviors as well as attitudes. In their totality they present a picture of youth language as functional, socially valuable, and flexible, with a special emphasis on identity negotiations.
