BOOK EXCERPT:
Scientific Essay from the year 2008 in the subject Musicology, University of Greenwich (Greenwich Maritime Institute), course: 5th International Congress of Maritime History (IMEHA2008), language: English, abstract: Maritime hymns are part of what is generally referred to as 'maritime literature' - a term used for fictional and non-fictional texts about the sea. Maritime hymns are not just Christian hymns written for sailors. They take us on a metaphorical sea journey which surpasses any national and denominational boundaries. Comparing maritime hymns from Germany with those from England and the U.S. has revealed that the sea journey of the soul is an archetype which forms an intrinsic part of our European cultural and spiritual heritage.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Your Path Led through the Sea chronicles a journey from shallow to deep waters, from quiet ponds and trickling streams to roaring rivers, thundering falls, and storm-tossed seas, which aim to bring the reader into a deeper spiritual understanding of life’s tempests and storms from which flow those rivers of living water, deeper intimacy with God. Many Scripture references, hymns, and the insights of noted Christian authors, like light dancing on the surface of the deep, are scattered throughout these pages. If you choose to dive in, you will learn how God chooses to still the storm, to walk with you over boisterous waves, or, like Peter, draw you up and out of them. Even if God’s path should lead you through the sea, his way through the mighty waters, he will part them, and you will not have to walk through them alone.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Following a brief introduction showing the current state of Cowper scholarship, this book first examines eighteenth-century critical theory, showing how theology and literary analysis frequently overlapped. The next chapters examine Cowper's formative relationship with the satirical culture of the early 1760s, continuing with an explanation of how Cowper was drawn into public satirical debate as a result of his cousin's lengthy and controversial defense of polygamy. Cowper's reputation as a satirist is then juxtaposed with his understanding of gardening as an endeavor rich in political and theological metaphors. The final chapters consider Cowper's fascination with frontiers and with marsh maritime imagery, imagery that represents the defining limits of his imagination. The book concludes by asserting that Cowper's contradictions, inhibitions, and honest insecurities render his body of work peculiarly relevant to a twenty-first-century readership. Conrad Brunstrom is Lecturer in English at the National University of Ireland Maynooth.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Hitherto, the of the Methodist revival has received only moderate, and mainly descriptive, attention. This study moves beyond description and approaches the phenomenon from a "discourse" angle. A corpus-based investigation of the workings of Methodism in its many different discourse aspects highlights how and why Methodism in its early Wesleyan stage was remarkably efficient in providing a multi-modal message which answered the needs and aspirations of the underprivileged. A critical assessment shows that there is little reason to indict the Wesleyans with any manipulative intent. Wesley's discourse did, however, contain some elements which were misunderstood and misapplied when later Methodism lost its Wesleyan touch; but the Methodist revival as a whole cannot be indicted with deliberate manipulation of the working masses.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Following three years of ethnomusicological fieldwork on the sacred singing traditions of evangelical Christians in North-East Scotland and Northern Isles coastal communities, Frances Wilkins documents and analyses current singing practices in this book by placing them historically and contemporaneously within their respective faith communities. In ascertaining who the singers were and why, when, where, how and what they chose to sing, the study explores a number of related questions. How has sacred singing contributed to the establishment and reinforcement of individual and group identities both in the church and wider community? What is the process by which specific regional repertoires and styles develop? Which organisations and venues have been particularly conducive to the development of sacred singing in the community? How does the subject matter of songs relate to the immediate environment of coastal inhabitants? How and why has gospel singing in coastal communities changed? These questions are answered with comprehensive reference to interview material, fieldnotes, videography and audio field recordings. As one of the first pieces of ethnomusicological research into sacred music performance in Scotland, this ethnography draws important parallels between practices in the North East and elsewhere in the British Isles and across the globe.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This book delves into the intricate and, as argued, essential relationship between poetics and religion in Pindar. It explores how performance, cult, and religious attitudes intersect, offering readers a nuanced approach to Pindaric poetry concerning the relationship between mortals and the divine. Marinis approaches the world of Pindaric poetry within its historical context, enabling readers to explore the cultural and religious foundations of Pindar’s lyric verse. The chapters examine both epinician poetry and cultic songs, the two major genres of the Pindaric corpus. This monograph focuses on the interconnectedness of poetics and religion, a central question that is essential for understanding the distinctive nature of Pindaric poetry. It examines the diverse ways in which Pindaric poetic tropes intersect with religious themes through detailed analysis and scholarly research. Readers gain an understanding of the significance of performance and cult in the public enactment of Pindar’s works, exploring the relations between mortals – the composer of the song, its performer, and the victor in the case of epinician poetry – and the divine, highlighting the complexities of ancient Greek literature regarding religious practices and attitudes. Through its rigorous examination of Pindaric poetics and religious themes, this book offers readers a profound insight into the religious dimensions of ancient Greek poetry and the enduring legacy of Pindar’s oeuvre. Poetics and Religion in Pindar is suitable for scholars and students working on ancient Greek literature, particularly the works of Pindar and lyric poetry, as well as those interested in classical literature and ancient Greek religion and culture more broadly.
