BOOK EXCERPT:
The story of a renowned French painter who volunteered for the Army during the First World War paints a vivid picture of the horror at the front in his letters home written before his death in 1915. “A Bestseller, remarkable for the horrors of the western front conveyed in a spirit of self-sacrifice and filial love.”- A Companion to World War One ed. John Horne, Blackwell Publishing, 2012 “THE following letters were written by a young French painter who was at the front until the beginning of April, 1915, when he “disappeared” in one of the combats in the Argonne region of France. “Should he be spoken of in the present or in the past?” asks M. André Chevrillon , a friend of the soldier’s family, in the preface to the French edition of this book. “Since the day when his mother and grandmother received from him his last communication, a post card bespattered with mud which announced the attack in which he fell, what a tragic silence for these two women who, during eight months, had lived only with these letters, which came almost daily. In his studio, among the pictures in which this young man had fixed his dreams and his visions of an artist, I have seen, piously arranged on a table, all the little square white sheets of this correspondence. What a speechless presence! I did not know then what a soul was there transcribed in these messages to the family hearth - a fully formed soul, which, if it had lived, I feel sure would have spread its fame and its influence far beyond this little home circle and radiated a-wide among the hearts of men.””

Frank signed up immediately and this book describes some of his experiences as a sniper. Do to some prior military service in Halifax he had been promoted to Sargent in Kenora and he maintained that rank through out the war. Frank describes the fact that he was able to mentally beat the shell shock he was starting to suffer all on his own. He spent three years seven months in the front lines being wounded by machine gun fire during the battle of Ameins where the allies chased the Germans out of their trenches never letting them dig another. After a lengthy recovery period he got back to Kenora, his job as a Railroad Engineer and canoeing his favorite pass time.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The unprecedented magnitude of death during World War I forever altered how people perceived their world and how they represented those perceptions. In Postcards from the Trenches, Allyson Booth traces the complex relationship between British Great War culture and modernist writings. She shows that, through the experience of the Great War, both civilian and combatant modernist writers found that language could no longer represent experience. She goes on to identify and contextualize several of the resulting modernist tropes: she links the dissolving modernist self to soldiers' familiarity with corpses, the modernist mistrust of factuality to the apparent inaccessibility of facts regarding the "rape of Belgium," and the modernist interest in multiple viewpoints to the singularity of perspective with which generals studied battlefield maps. Though her emphasis is on literary works by Robert Graves, E.M. Forster, and Vera Brittain, among others, Booth's analysis extends to memorials, posters, and architecture of the Great War. This interdisciplinary quality of Booth's study results in a much deeper understanding of how the Great War affected cultural representations and how that culture represented the War.

Purchase one of 1st World Library's Classic Books and help support our free internet library of downloadable eBooks. Visit us online at www.1stWorldLibrary.ORG - - I have tried as an American in writing this book to give the public a complete view of the trenches and life on the Western Front as it appeared to me, and also my impression of conditions and men as I found them. It has been a pleasure to write it, and now that I have finished I am genuinely sorry that I cannot go further. On the lecture tour I find that people ask me questions, and I have tried in this book to give in detail many things about the quieter side of war that to an audience would seem too tame. I feel that the public want to know how the soldiers live when not in the trenches, for all the time out there is not spent in killing and carnage. As in the case of all men in the trenches, I heard things and stories that especially impressed me, so I have written them as hearsay, not taking to myself credit as their originator. I trust that the reader will find as much joy in the cockney character as I did and which I have tried to show the public; let me say now that no finer body of men than those Bermondsey boys of my battalion could be found.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The soldiers receive the best service a historian can provide: their story is told in their own words - Guardian 'For some reason nothing seemed to happen to us at first; we strolled along as though walking in a park. Then, suddenly, we were in the midst of a storm of machine-gun bullets and I saw men beginning to twirl round and fall in all kinds of curious ways' On 1 July 1916, a continous line of British soldiers climbed out from the trenches of the Somme into No Man's Land and began to walk towards dug-in German troops armed with machine-guns. By the end of the day there were more than 60,000 British casualties - a third of them fatal. Martin Middlebrook's now-classic account of the blackest day in the history of the British army draws on official sources from the time, and on the words of hundreds of survivors: normal men, many of them volunteers, who found themselves thrown into a scene of unparalleled tragedy and horror.

BOOK EXCERPT:
How a lone Florida Sheriff fought the U.S. Justice Department--and won! The amazing career of Bob Vogel began in the Florida Highway Patrol, where he personally took over billion dollars in street value of drugs off the market in just three years. Bob tells his story about the war on drugs, on the controversial practice of profiling, and about his years-long battle to prove that his law enforcement efforts were both lawful and prudent. His results helped stem the flow of drugs north and south up Interstate 95 for a number of years, and he was featured on 60 Minutes for his remarkable record. Bob Vogel had taken the upper hand in the fight against drugs. Word in the drug trade spread - avoid Volusia County. His office and officers received numerous citations for a job well done. What should have followed was thankful support from the local media, the state of Florida and even the U.S. Justice Department. Despite full clearance by two separate FBI investigations and a Governor's Panel, and further vindication from a judge who tossed out a class action lawsuit for lack of evidence, two Department of Justice attorneys spent more than two years investigating Sheriff Vogel and his office, at a cost of millions to taxpayers. Fighting to Win is Bob Vogel's own story of his nightmarish odyssey against forces he never dreamed he'd have to battle. But, as he will tell you throughout this compelling chronicle of his career, when you have right on your side you will ultimately triumph.
