BOOK EXCERPT:

Academic Paper from the year 2017 in the subject Pedagogy - Higher Education, grade: 3, , language: English, abstract: Do students perform better if they are granted a computer via a loan program? The university of Rwanda started a program called Positivo, in which they intended to enhance students’ performances by providing them with laptops. The objective of this paper was to assess the impact of such loan program. A study was conducted with students who benefitted from this program. In the study 88 participants from different departments were chosen. Self-administered questionnaires were used to obtain primary data to be used in the analysis. The students were asked questions related to their computer use, as well as about the marks they obtained before and after the introduction of the computer loan program. The paired sample t-test and descriptive statistics were implemented to study the difference between the two points in time, in order to discuss the general impact of the introduction of the Positivo laptop computer loan on the learning environment.

BOOK EXCERPT:

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Pedagogy - Media Pedagogy, grade: 2.9, University of Rwanda (University of Rwanda/College of Business and Economics), course: Applied Statistics, language: English, abstract: As technology use continues to rise, especially among young individuals, there are concerns that excessive use of technology especially laptop computer may impact academic performance scores. Researchers have started to investigate the possible negative effects of technology use on college academic performance, but the results have been mixed. The objective of this study was to test at what extent does laptop usage affect student’s academic performance for undergraduate’s students in University of Rwanda, Huye campus-college of Business and Economics. The total sample size was 235 students in which 91 students, own laptop computer and 144 did not own laptop computer, all students were from year one, two and year three applied statistics based on multistage sampling design. Self-administered questionnaires were used to obtain data to be used in analysis, asking questions regarding to the ownership of laptop, type of use, laptop literacy and internet use frequency. Two types of hypothesis were used to test for any relationship between academic performance and laptop use, hypothesis one set as: “There are no evidences for the differences exist in performance scores of students who use computer and non-computer user irrespective the purpose of use” and hypothesis two was: “There is no Statistical difference in average marks of students who own laptop computer and students who don’t have computer”. To test the plausibility of these statement the study employed both binary logistics regression to see who is likely to perform well and two independent sample t-test sought to reveal exact difference between categories of laptop use on which was categorized students into low laptop users and higher laptop users. The study results revealed, that all hypothesis has been rejected from all tests used in the analysis, the two independent sample t-test rejected the 2 hypotheses at 5% level of significance (0.041; 0,001

BOOK EXCERPT:

Master's Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Computer Science - Didactics, University of Twente (Behavioural Science), course: ICT in science and mathematics - Educational Science and Technology, language: English, abstract: This study investigated the ways through which pre-service science and mathematics teachers at Dar es Salaam University College of Education (DUCE) can acquire competencies for integrating technology pedagogy and content in teaching. Specifically the study investigated the preservice teachers' ICT integration competencies; practices that can be effective in enhancing pre-service science and mathematics teachers' competency in integrating technology, pedagogy and content; as well as the impact of those practices in the development of preservice teachers' technological pedagogical content knowledge. An action research approach was employed in the study, employing the pre and post-intervention assessment of preservice teachers' knowledge on technology, pedagogy and content. Planed interventions were carried out during the study, to enable preservice teachers to identify areas of weaknesses in their technology integration competencies, and propose alternative approaches for addressing the identified weaknesses. Student questionnaire, instructor interview and observation checklist were used to collect date before, during and after intervention. Researcher's log book, digital camera and audio recorder were used in recording events and activities taking place during the study. Findings revealed that when preservice teachers engage in hands on activities such as microteaching, lesson design and the opportunity to share their ideas with peers, they easily developed their technological pedagogical content knowledge. An analysis of knowledge change after the intervention, showed a significant difference between pre-intervention and post intervention preservice teachers' knowledge of TPACK. It is therefore concluded that, the adoption of hands on ac
