This collection revisits Steven Box’s book, Power, Crime and Mystification, published in 1983, and considers its relevance forty years on. It introduces the critical analysis developed by Box which examined corporate crime, police crime, rape and sexual assault and female crime and analyses the continuities and discontinuities since 1983 in relation to crime, the state and the exercise/mystification of power. The book explores the ways in which we can see his influence nationally and internationally on critical criminological, zemiological and abolitionist writings today. It asks how can these perspectives be applied to a critical analysis of contemporary, state authoritarianism and the criminal injustice that this authoritarianism generates? Additionally, how can Box’s concepts shine a critical light on contemporary social harms that were not covered in the original book? This book explores the experience of immigration enforcement for women who have been detained in immigration detention in the UK. Drawing upon in-depth interviews with women who have been in immigration detention centres, Dignity, Women, and Immigration Detention demonstrates how immigration detention violates women’s sense of dignity and in doing so, causes women to suffer pains that are incongruent with the administrative purpose of immigration removal centres. The women interviewed were either detained in an Immigration Removal Centre, had spent time in this centre before being released into the UK community, or had been removed to Jamaica following time in immigration detention. This book argues that the current system used by the UK government is unfit for purpose and damaging to many of those who are ensnared within it. In examining dignity violation, lack of autonomy and diminishment, the book also considers possible alternatives to the current practice of incarceration and what can be done to alleviate the harms that are currently inflicted on women during the process of immigration enforcement in the UK. The Greek island of Lesvos is frequently the subject of news reports on the refugee ‘crisis’, but they only occasionally focus on the dire living conditions of asylum seekers already present on the island. Through direct experience as an activist in Lesvos refugee camps and detention centres, Iliadou gives voice to those with lived experiences of state violence.
