Immunocytochemistry For Steroid Receptors

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

A comprehensive review of the literature on steroid hormone receptor immuncytochemistry. It includes the development of the first monoclonal antireceptor antibody and initial procedures designed to localize steroid receptors in situ up to the present. The step-by-step instructions provide easy reading of topics such as tissue handling, processing, and interpretation. This text places particular emphasis on the studies of human material-especially mammary carcinoma. It presents specific details with chapters on estrogen and progesterone receptors in breast malignancies and benign breast disease. Each section of this outstanding book contains comprehensive photomicrographs that illustrate the most salient features discussed. Detailed graphs pertaining to theoretical particulars concerning technology and the relationship between image analysis and endocrine response are also included. This monograph is an excellent resource for all researchers concerned with hormone-dependent tissues, pathologists who have an interest in working with novel techniques for localizing steroid hormone receptors, and oncologists who must use assay results in the treatment of breast cancer.

Steroid Receptors In Health And Disease

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

During the last two decades, progress in steroid hormone research has resulted in the development of new approaches to contraception as well as diagnosis and treatment of endocrine disorders and cancers. Although significant advances have been made in the purification, characterization, immunochemistry and molecular biology of steroid receptors, the precise molecular mechanism of steroid hormone action has remained obscure. This book captures the detailed presentations made at the first conference on Steroid Receptors in Health and Disease held at Meadow Brook Hall, Oakland University in the fall of 1987. The purpose of this international con ference was to facilitate scientific exchange toward a better understand ing of the mode of action of steroid hormones. The scientific sessions consisted of poster presentations and state-of-the-art lectures, the latter of which make up this volume. The first chapter is meant to provide the reader with a more general background of the topics covered in the book, as well as to discuss certain theme-related issues that are either not yet well-established or accepted or are in the stage of infancy. It is hoped that this volume will serve as a useful treatise for students and investigators interested in basic and clinical aspects of biological regulation by steroid hormones. A task of this magnitude could not have been undertaken without the encouragement, advice and continued generous assistance of the members of the scientific committee. I am gratefully indebted to Drs.

Localization Of Putative Steroid Receptors

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

These volumes represent the "state-of-the-art" in morphological methods for detection of steroid receptors. In Volume I we have attempted to collect current available methods and experimental approahes which might be useful in solving present enigmas. The background and recent advances presented are intended to stimulate further experimentation and new innovations, and spur clinical trials by all investigators with an interest in steroid hormones, cell biology, and clinical oncology.

Receptors

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Methods in Neurosciences, Volume 11: Receptors: Model Systems and Specific Receptors is a compilation of papers that describes techniques and information that are important to the neurosciences. This volume discusses preferred receptor techniques, molecular techniques, and methods to determine receptor subclasses and localization in the ligand design. The first paper discusses the steroid receptor found in the central nervous system for steroid hormones that affects strongly the structure and function of both developed and immature nervous systems. Another paper describes how a glycoprotein of 79.5 kDa (transferrin) carries iron in the blood stream for delivery to different tissues, after the transferrin has bound with a specific receptor on the surface of the cell. This book also explains the binding sites of pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide in the human brain, while one paper analyzes the neurotensin receptors during the primary culture of neurons. This volume then also analyzes the structure and function of the fast nerve growth factor receptor, particularly how a signal on the outside of a cell is transmitted to the cell's interior. This collection is helpful for microbiologists, cellular researchers, students, and professors in the discipline of neurosciences.
