Implementing Strategies To Enhance Public Health Surveillance Of Physical Activity In The United States

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Physical activity has far-reaching benefits for physical, mental, emotional, and social health and well-being for all segments of the population. Despite these documented health benefits and previous efforts to promote physical activity in the U.S. population, most Americans do not meet current public health guidelines for physical activity. Surveillance in public health is the ongoing systematic collection, analysis, and interpretation of outcome-specific data, which can then be used for planning, implementation and evaluation of public health practice. Surveillance of physical activity is a core public health function that is necessary for monitoring population engagement in physical activity, including participation in physical activity initiatives. Surveillance activities are guided by standard protocols and are used to establish baseline data and to track implementation and evaluation of interventions, programs, and policies that aim to increase physical activity. However, physical activity is challenging to assess because it is a complex and multidimensional behavior that varies by type, intensity, setting, motives, and environmental and social influences. The lack of surveillance systems to assess both physical activity behaviors (including walking) and physical activity environments (such as the walkability of communities) is a critical gap. Implementing Strategies to Enhance Public Health Surveillance of Physical Activity in the United States develops strategies that support the implementation of recommended actions to improve national physical activity surveillance. This report also examines and builds upon existing recommended actions.

Routledge Handbook Of Physical Activity Policy And Practice

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Physical activity, inactivity and their relationship to health are serious concerns for governments around the world. This is the first book to critically examine the policy and practice of physical activity from a multi-disciplinary, social-scientific perspective. Moving beyond the usual biophysical and epidemiological approaches, it defines and explores the key themes that are shaping the global physical activity debate. Unrivalled in its scale and scope, it presents the latest data on physical activity from around the world, including case studies from Europe, North and South America, Africa and Asia. Drawing on social, economic and behavioural sciences, it covers contexts from the global to the local and introduces the dominant ideas which inform the study of physical activity. Its 41 chapters examine the use of different forms of evidence in policymaking, the role of organisations in advocating physical activity, and the practical realities of public health interventions. The Routledge Handbook of Physical Activity Policy and Practice is a landmark publication for all students, academics, policymakers and practitioners interested in the social-scientific study of sport, exercise, physical activity and public health.

BOOK EXCERPT:

This text introduces Models-Based Instruction for physical education. It presents effective teaching models such as Cooperative Learning, Personalized Systems of Instruction (PSI), and Direct Instruction clearly and articulately. It also covers models that have been specifically developed for teaching PE, such as Sport Education and Tactical Games. This book brings together in one text a number of teaching models that have appeared in isolated books and journals. By presenting a Models-Based perspective, Instructional Models for Physical Education will help PE teachers learn, select, and practice these comprehensive patterns of teaching. An instructional model is a unique plan of action, designed to facilitate certain learning outcomes for students. Each model establishes its own pattern of decision making, classroom operations, and responsibilities for the teacher and students. After each model is explained, it is followed with examples of lesson plans and suggestions for adapting the model to various teaching contexts with appropriate learning activities.
