Providing a selection of papers presented at ICECE 2018, a biennial conference organised by the Early Childhood Education Program, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia. The conference’s general theme was "Finding Alternative Approaches, Theories, Frameworks, and Practices of Early Childhood Education in the 21th Century." Distinct from other periods of time, the 21st century is characterised by so much knowledge -easy to access but hard to grasp, borderless and hyper-connected society mediated by the internet, high competitiveness -not only within a country but across countries, high mobility, and widening economic discrepancy as neoliberalism has strengthened its influence on every sector of human life. The children of today will face many things that have not yet been invented or discovered, sometimes beyond expectations. Scholars and teachers of early childhood education need to be aware of these astonishing changes. The way children and childhood are seen cannot stay the same, and so does the way children of this century are educated. The conference opened a discussion about finding alternative approaches, theories, and best practices of early childhood education for a rapidly changing and globalised society.

This comprehensive, research-based resource illuminates the challenges and benefits of integrating community-based transformational learning (CBTL) experiences of teachers, students, and the community in early childhood settings. Balancing historical context with theoretical underpinnings, ongoing research, and current practice, this multi-authored volume demystifies the praxeology of CBTL. Mobile learning is a primary learning format in the education of young children from birth through 6th grade. This format has been found to have a positive impact on the academic achievement, self-efficacy, motivation, and learning attitudes of students, including those with special needs (Ciampa, 2014; Hwang, 2014; Nikou & Economides, 2018; Xie, Basham, Marino & Rice, 2018). In both formal and informal learning contexts, mobile learning affords opportunities to innovate and explore new forms of authentic experiences, meaning-making, and creativity with untethered technology (Choi, Land, & Zimmerman, 2018; Schuck, Kearney & Burden, 2017). This edited book acts as a springboard to expand discussions surrounding how mobiles might best be situated in contexts relating to young children. With a focus on early childhood and elementary settings, this book both expands the definition of mobiles to encompass digital-physical tools (e.g. Osmo, probeware) and wearables. It also provides insight into how intentional integration of mobiles supports the development and practice of both in-service and preservice teachers working with students in early childhood and elementary settings.

This second edition of Project-Based Learning (PBL) presents an original approach to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) centric PBL. We define PBL as an “ill-defined task with a well-defined outcome,” which is consistent with our engineering design philosophy and the accountability highlighted in a standards-based environment. This model emphasizes a backward design that is initiated by well-defined outcomes, tied to local, state, or national standard that provide teachers with a framework guiding students’ design, solving, or completion of ill-defined tasks. This book was designed for middle and secondary teachers who want to improve engagement and provide contextualized learning for their students. However, the nature and scope of the content covered in the 14 chapters are appropriate for preservice teachers as well as for advanced graduate method courses. New to this edition is revised and expanded coverage of STEM PBL, including implementing STEM PBL with English Language Learners and the use of technology in PBL.
