Shelters, kiosks, snack bars, market stalls, bus stops, telephone booths, toilets, advertising columns, ticket booths, mobile tents or housing units, emergency shelters, tourist information booths—this list of small, autonomously functioning buildings could be expanded almost infinitely. Small buildings shape our daily lives; they are found at the nearest street corner; they are present and indispensable, but as architecture they attract our attention only rarely. Yet these small structures occupy a definite place in the infrastructure of the city. Rather than focusing on the large attractions of architecture, architects find many potential ways to ensure the quality of everyday design hidden in these small, sometimes charming necessities. This volume in the DETAIL series spans the arc between architecture and product design, since not infrequently small buildings are located precisely in the area of tension between these two professions, and their successful realization is evident in the details of their construction.

The two volume set LNCS 4841 and LNCS 4842 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Third International Symposium on Visual Computing, ISVC 2007, held in Lake Tahoe, NV, USA, in November 2007. The 77 revised full papers and 42 poster papers presented together with 32 full and five poster papers of six special tracks were carefully reviewed and selected. The papers cover the four main areas of visual computing: vision, graphics, visualization, and virtual reality.

Data warehouses differ significantly from traditional transaction-oriented operational database applications. Indexing techniques and index structures applied in the transaction-oriented context are not feasible for data warehouses. This work develops specific heuristic indexing techniques which process range queries on aggregated data more efficiently than those traditionally used in transaction-oriented systems. Excavations in Residential Areas of Tikal—Nonelite Groups Without Shrines is a two-volume presentation of the excavations carried out in and near small residential structures at Tikal, Guatemala, beginning in 1961. These reports show that Tikal was more than a ceremonial center; in addition to its numerous temples, the great Maya city was home to a large population of people. These volumes look at the residential structures themselves as well as domestic artifacts such as burials, ceramic test pits, chultuns. Tikal Report 20B is primarily analytical in nature, reviewing and interpreting the data from Report 20A to draw new conclusions about settlement, demography, and society at Tikal. Together, Tikal Reports 20A and 20B augment the data presented in Tikal Reports 19 and 21.
