BOOK EXCERPT:
In the context of his conversation with the Samaritan woman the Johannine Jesus says "the true worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and truth" (4:23). In this monograph Benny Thettayil undertakes a detailed exegetical study of the fourth evangelist's understanding of 'worship in Spirit and truth'. Part One is devoted to a detailed exegetical analysis of John 4:19-26 focusing on the relationship between Jews and Samaritans, the meaning of pneuma and aletheia as well as the question whether Jesus reveals himself as the Messiah to the Samaritan woman. In Part Two Thettayil offers an extensive study of the replacement theme in the Fourth Gospel. He studies this issue in connection with the Johannine community and with the presentation of Jesus as the fulfilment of the temple. In his final chapter Thettayil enters into the difficult field of "Johannine Replacement Theology", taking up the challenge of confronting the theological implications of the way the fourth evangelist presents judaism.

BOOK EXCERPT:
In Spirit and In Truth Rediscovering the Message of Jesus Two thousand years ago, a Jewish carpenter with a small band of followers introduced ideas and concepts that shook the religious world down to its very foundations. Two thousand years later, the two-billion-person, multibillion-dollar religious infrastructure it spawned impacts the entire globe, but seems to have lost touch with many of the core ideas introduced by Jesus in the days when he and his disciples walked around Galilee. This book seeks to help readers rediscover the warmth, comfort, and relevance of Jesus by encouraging its readers to take another closer look at his essential message.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Written with the student and interested public in mind, Truth in Translation aims to explain what is involved and what is at stake in Bible translation. It begins with brief treatments of the background to the Bible and its translation, the various approaches to translation, and the specific origins of nine translation versions in wide use in the English-speaking world today. It then proceeds to compare those versions on nine points of translation, ranging from individual terms, to difficult passages, to whole categories of grammar. The book serves to inform readers of the forces at work shaping the meaning of the Bible, to help in their selection of Bible translations, and to act as a critical catalyst for the improvement of Bible translations through more careful attention to the risk of bias in the translation process.
