BOOK EXCERPT:
How are we to sustain activism and compassion amidst the never-ending crises of the twenty-first century? While the concern for social justice is deeply biblical, cynicism, burnout, and despair are all too common side effects when action is divorced from contemplation. To effectively serve as the hands and feet of Jesus, the church must attend to the revitalization of its inner life through the spiritual practices which feed, support, and sustain the work of the kingdom. Rather than the fragmentation and dualism that have led denominations to choose between prayer and service, evangelization and justice, the church must integrate heart, mind, and body in order to fulfil its calling to transform the world from within. Drawing from Scripture and a wide range of Christian traditions – from the monastic to the evangelical – this book inspires its readers to integrate spiritual renewal and prophetic witness for the glory of God and the good of his creation.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The Cross in the Midst of Creation: Following Jesus, Engaging the Powers, Transforming the World links Christian understandings of creation, atonement, and the biblical principalities and powers. Sharon Delgado asserts that the crucifixion is ongoing as institutional powers diminish human life and destroy creation, and that the resurrection is ongoing as faith overcomes despair and the Spirit equips people to rise in courage and follow Jesus into the heart of the struggle for a transformed world. This book explores and critiques traditional doctrines and popular teachings about the cross and draws from various stories of Jesus and biblical metaphors to offer life-enhancing perspectives on this core symbol of Christian faith. It presents the cross as a symbol of God's presence throughout creation and undying love as revealed in Jesus; also explored are the path of discipleship, the moral bankruptcy of the dominating powers, engagement through nonviolent resistance, and above all, God's triumph over the powers, offering hope for the world. It also challenges followers of Jesus to throw off despair and complacency, exposes disempowering and hate-filled teachings that claim to be Christian, and reclaims the gospel as a force for healing, empowerment, and both personal and social transformation. By participating in the ongoing story of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus and experiencing the tangible presence of the Holy Spirit, we discover the creative power at the heart of this and every universe: the all-encompassing, infinite, eternal love of God.

BOOK EXCERPT:
In life, we aren't always who we used to be, but we also aren't exactly who we're going to be. Sometimes we're somewhere in the middle, trying to make sense of it all. But that's okay because there's a lot of beauty in the journey. This is where we find Rachel. She just recently graduated from college and is off to start her fresh, new adult life. Rachel shocks everyone by choosing to chase her dream instead of playing it safe. She heads off to a brand-new city and begins her brand-new life. We follow her transition into adulthood and her discovery of purpose. Through her journey, Rachel is aligned with purpose partners and also attracts a few distractions. Unfortunately, like many of us, she isn't always able to tell the difference between the people and things that propel her towards purpose and those that deter her from it. Nevertheless, Rachel tries her best to navigate this season of transition. At the end, we take a closer look at Rachel's journey. Through this study guide, we identify all the defining moments and life lessons she had along the way. My hope is to inspire you to then look back over your own journey. Doing so will reveal to you moments and lessons you might have missed In the Midst.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Long suspicious that the world was going to go up in flames, Jay has retreated to remote Northern California and lived off the grid for years. She didn’t want to be right—but she was. When the war ended, it was clear nobody had won. Susan knows only one place where she and her extended family might be safe: with Jay, her ex. Desperate and frightened, the refugees rely heavily on their friend Piper, who agrees to make the journey with them. After a ragged reunion, Jay is willing to take in the newcomers, but the only way they will survive on the land is if they all work and sacrifice. It is easier said than done, especially when old feelings—and new ones—break the fragile peace and threaten them all.

BOOK EXCERPT:
In the late 1860s, typically peaceable Canada found itself under attack. The invaders were members of the Fenian Brotherhood, an Irish Republican group based in the U.S. In a series of raids that occurred over a period of years, hundreds were wounded and dozens were killed, and many historians believe that the attacks fomented anti-American feelings in Canada. This gripping fictionalized account of the raids offers a blow-by-blow narrative of the most significant skirmishes.

Hardships and pain are inevitable and will be encountered in everyone's life. At some point in our life, we will experience hardships, pain, and suffering, for no one can escape them. Prepared people aren't as badly affected by the inevitability of hardships as those who aren't prepared. How you deal with hardships defines your future. Hardships and suffering define your character and make you better. Pain and hardship give one an opportunity to grow as a person. They are impermanent and won't last. Nothing in our universe escapes impermanence. Keep the truth "it won't last" in your mind. Strength comes from realizing that other people are going through what you're going through. Pain and suffering can't be avoided and sometimes come acutely. Fierce experiences are a part of life. Negative self-talk increases their effect, while positive self-talk keeps you calm. Use your words to turn negative thoughts into positive ones. Deal with stress through your self-talk. We all talk to ourselves, either out loud or in our heads. Your positive self-talk will reduce stress and help you deal with situations that cause you stress. Control your thoughts and words. Stress and anxiety can help us make the necessary changes in our lives and help us to act in our best interest. Everyone has feelings of nervousness, tension, and stress at times. BOOK EXCERPT:
Unarmed civilian peacekeeping or protection (UCP) is a generic term that gives recognition to a wide range of activities by unarmed civilians to reduce violence and protect civilians in situations of violent conflict. There are many non-governmental as well as governmental organisations that engage in UCP, using a variety of methods and approaches. This study examines UCP in four conflict-affected regions: Colombia, Mindanao (Philippines), Palestine/Israel, and South Sudan. It focuses on what is emerging as good practice in these varied contexts and whether any commonalities can inform the expanded use of UCP.
