India’s endeavour under Prime Minister Modi is to actively interact and cooperate with the international community and to promote India’s regional and global objectives. India has tried to deepen her engagements with the South Asian neighbours, as also built important strategic partnerships with U.S, Russia, Korea and Japan. There has been an upward trajectory in India’s Act East Policy, and her engagement with the Southeast Asian and East Asian countries has enlarged. In her Look West Policy, India is simultaneously, trying to balance her relationship with the Gulf nations and Israel. Thus, India is slowly expanded its diplomatic footprint and its outreach, to both, existing as well as new partners. Modi's Make in India project, Atmanirbhar Bharat, and similar initiatives constructed on multi-vectored alignment or strategic interconnectedness have given India unprecedented visibility worldwide. This book is a collection of essays penned by a few established scholars in the field and budding scholars under the guidance of established scholars. One retired diplomat and one retired Vice -Admiral, contributed each piece, rooted in their own experiences. Given India’s growing power and aspirations in world politics, there has been increasing interest among practitioners and scholars of international relations (IR) in how India views the world. This book offers the first systematic investigation of the world order models in India’s foreign policy discourse. By examining how the signifier ‘world order’ is endowed with meaning in the discourse, it moves beyond Western-centric IR and sheds light on how a state located outside the Western ‘core’ conceptualizes world order. Drawing on poststructuralism and discourse theory, the book proposes a novel analytical framework for studying foreign policy discourses and understanding the changes and continuities in India’s post-cold war foreign policy.
