BOOK EXCERPT:
Astrologers play an important role in Indian society, but there are very few studies on their social identity and professional practices. Based on extensive fieldwork carried out in the city of Banaras, Words of Destiny shows how the Brahmanical scholarly tradition of astral sciences (jyotiḥśāstra) described in Sanskrit literature and taught at universities has been adapted and reformulated to meet the needs and questions of educated middle and upper classes in urban India: How to get a career promotion? How to choose the most suitable field of study for children? When is the best moment to move into a new house? The study of astrology challenges ready-made assumptions about the boundaries between "science" and "superstition," "rationality" and "magic." Rather than judging the validity of astrology as a knowledge system, Caterina Guenzi explores astrological counseling as a social practice and how it "works from within" for both astrologers and their clients. She examines the points of view of those who use astrology either as a way of earning their living or as a means through which to solve problems and make decisions, concluding that, because astrology combines mathematical calculations and astronomical observations with ritual practices, it provides educated urban families with an idiom through which modern science and devotional Hinduism can be subsumed.

BOOK EXCERPT:
America's Destiny sets forth compelling evidence of America's divine origin and destiny-that it was a nation founded upon divine providence, not coincidence, as testified repeatedly by the Founding Fathers, respected historians, and statesmen. This revised edition also adds numerous scriptures and statements from prophets of God attesting to this truth. With that perspective, America's Destiny asks the question that should be on all of our minds, "What is the greatest challenge facing our nation today and how should we confront it in a way that pleases God?" The economy, national security, immigration, gun control, poverty, racism, crime, national pandemics, climate change? While each of these is a valid concern and deserves attention, none of them strikes at the heart of our greatest challenge, namely, finding a way to build stronger homes and bring about a return to family, God, and moral values. To put our prime focus on challenges other than these is to strike at the leaves, not the root of the problem. It is now our choice and America's choice - to place our trust in the wisdom of God or the wisdom of the world - to be a nation under God or without God. If we become a nation under God, then we become eligible to receive the promise: "Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord." (Psalm 33:12)

BOOK EXCERPT:
In this book, the author, in the backdrop of his vast and varied experience, looks at the major challenges confronting the country after about six decades of her 'tryst with destiny'. The analysis done indicates how these challenges have arisen, how deep-rooted infirmities of the Indian state and society have remained untackled, how a leadership with a great vision and will has not emerged at various levels of public life and how the current culture of superficiality has prevented the nation from perceiving the dangers that lie ahead. But the book is not restricted to analysis alone. Nor does it limit itself to viewing the fall-out of India's failed 'tryst with destiny'. It offers a new architecture for reshaping this 'destiny' and looking forward to another tryst. Shri Jagmohan, with his characteristic candour, observes: "The light of freedom about which Jawaharlal Nehru spoke so eloquently on the night of August 14-15, 1947, was too weak to pierce through the darkness created by the heaps of garbage which India had collected in her courtyards during the long period of her social and cultural degeneration."
