Voluntary Carbon Markets

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The world carbon market is growing at a staggering rate with trading volumes into the tens of billions of dollars and approaching a billion tonnes of carbon dioxide. The growth prospects for business are enormous and the potential positive impacts for greenhouse gas emission reductions, climate policy options, renewable energy investment, development projects and efficiency gains are increasingly apparent.A key part of the market in greenhouse gas emissions is the rapidly growing voluntary carbon market driven by companies, organizations and individuals committed to efficiency, profitability and rapid action on climate change. HSBC, Volvo, Avis, Ricoh and American Express are but a few of the many companies now offsetting their greenhouse gas emissions and becoming 'carbon neutral', fuelling an international voluntary carbon market that is growing exponentially. This groundbreaking business book, written in a fast-paced journalistic style, draws together all the key information on international voluntary carbon markets with commentary from leading practitioners and business people. The voluntary market is complex, fragmented and multi-layered, but it is beginning to consolidate around a few guiding practices and business models from which conclusions can be drawn about market direction and opportunities. The book covers all aspects of voluntary carbon markets around the world: what they are, how they work and, most critically, their business potential to help slow climate change. It is the indispensable guide for anyone seeking to understand voluntary carbon markets and capitalize on the opportunities they present for economic and environmental benefit. If you want to be ahead of the curve for the next big thing, you need this book.

The Legacies Of Law

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Focusing on South Africa during the period 1650–2000, this book examines the role of law in making democracy work in changing societies. The Legacies of Law sheds light on the neglected relationship between path dependence and the law. Meierhenrich argues that legal norms and institutions, even illiberal ones, have an important - and hitherto undertheorized - structuring effect on democratic outcomes. Under certain conditions, law appears to reduce uncertainty in democratization by invoking common cultural backgrounds and experiences. In instances where interacting adversaries share qua law reasonably convergent mental models, transitions from authoritarian rule are shown to be less intractable. Meierhenrich's historical analysis of the evolution of law - and its effects - in South Africa during the period 1650–2000, compared with a short study of Chile from 1830–1990, shows how, and when, legal norms and institutions serve as historical causes to both liberal and illiberal rule.

Financial Institutions Markets And Services

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book delves into the structure, operation, and expansion of India’s financial system. For students of finance and money management, gaining a thorough understanding of how the financial system functions is crucial for effectively analyzing and comprehending monetary and financial policies. The first edition of this book provides a comprehensive view of the entire landscape of banking and non-banking institutions, as well as the various markets for both short-term and long-term financial instruments and services. It covers significant issues within the Indian financial system, such as financial inclusion, the new pension system, insurance principles, the auctioning of treasury bills, and foreign direct investment in India’s retail sector. In addition, the book offers an in-depth analysis of derivatives, including their role in the global economy, market design, major policy changes, and the development of the derivatives market both in India and internationally. Recent financial reforms and current trends in the Indian financial industry are highlighted to reflect the latest developments. The evolution of a sophisticated financial system in India, especially since the early 1990s, has also led to the growth of a robust financial services sector. The efficiency of this emerging system is closely linked to the quality and range of financial services offered by non-banking financial companies, which, although still developing, are increasingly significant to the financial system. Financial services are broadly categorized into fund/asset-based and fee-based/advisory services, and this book addresses both categories. While focusing on the analytical aspects from the perspectives of both non-banking financial intermediaries and their clients, the book also thoroughly examines legal, procedural, tax, accounting, and regulatory dimensions. To facilitate learning and assessment, the text includes illustrative problems and review questions. A distinctive feature of the book is its blend of theoretical and practical insights into the contemporary Indian financial services sector. It is intended primarily for educators and advanced students in finance, management, commerce, and accounting, but it also serves as a valuable resource for practicing professionals. The book provides an overview of non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) as regulated by the RBI, including theoretical, conceptual, and regulatory aspects of lease financing and other fund-based services. It also covers legal, analytical, and regulatory facets of hire purchase finance, consumer credit, and the institutional and operational framework of merchant banking in India. The analysis extends to prominent merchant banking activities, such as mergers and acquisitions, stock broking, and credit rating.
