This new volume introduces readers to the current topics of industrial and applied mathematics in China, with applications to material science, information science, mathematical finance and engineering. The authors utilize mathematics for the solution of problems. The purposes of the volume are to promote research in applied mathematics and computational science; further the application of mathematics to new methods and techniques useful in industry and science; and provide for the exchange of information between the mathematical, industrial, and scientific communities.

This open access book contains review papers authored by thirteen plenary invited speakers to the 9th International Congress on Industrial and Applied Mathematics (Valencia, July 15-19, 2019). Written by top-level scientists recognized worldwide, the scientific contributions cover a wide range of cutting-edge topics of industrial and applied mathematics: mathematical modeling, industrial and environmental mathematics, mathematical biology and medicine, reduced-order modeling and cryptography. The book also includes an introductory chapter summarizing the main features of the congress. This is the first volume of a thematic series dedicated to research results presented at ICIAM 2019-Valencia Congress.

An important objective of the study of mathematics is to analyze and visualize phenomena of nature and real world problems for its proper understanding. Gradually, it is also becoming the language of modem financial instruments. To project some of these developments, the conference was planned under the joint auspices of the Indian Society of Industrial and Applied mathematics (ISlAM) and Guru Nanak Dev University (G. N. D. U. ), Amritsar, India. Dr. Pammy Manchanda, chairperson of Mathematics Department, G. N. D. U. , was appointed the organizing secretary and an organizing committee was constituted. The Conference was scheduled in World Mathematics Year 2000 but, due one reason or the other, it could be held during 22. -25. January 2001. How ever, keeping in view the suggestion of the International Mathematics union, we organized two symposia, Role of Mathematics in industrial development and vice-versa and How image of Mathematics can be improved in public. These two symposia aroused great interest among the participants and almost everyone participated in the deliberations. The discussion in these two themes could be summarized in the lengthy following lines: "Tradition of working in isolation is a barrier for interaction with the workers in the other fields of science and engineering, what to talk of non-academic areas, specially the private sector of finance and industry. Therefore, it is essential to build bridges within in stitutions and between institutions.

Information Linkage Between Applied Mathematics and Industry is a collection of papers dealing with mathematics in engineering context and applications. One paper describes Chernoff faces as a technique of representing multidimensional data and compares the technique with Andrews' sine curves and Anderson's metroglyphys. Another paper investigates practical problems that can arise during implementation of the methods of parameter optimization, using as an example the trajectory of the space shuttle from liftoff to insertion into orbit. One paper analyzes Soviet foreign policy using a graphical representation of k-dimensional data as a statistical tool, written specifically for analysts in foreign policy and international relations. During the period 1964-1975, Soviet foreign policy is active in 25 Sub-Saharan African countries. Another paper discusses ballistics modeling in real time and recommends that investigators be familiar with the computer language to be used, the type of system to be applied, the type of weapon to be modeled, the accuracy required, and other existing ballistic programs. Other papers discuss probabilistic dynamic programming for fault isolation and applied mathematics, as well as engineering in the transport of Antarctic ice resources. The collection can prove valuable to mathematicians, engineers, or designers of industrial processes, computers, aviation, and space technology.

This book is about time-domain modelling, stability, stabilization, control design and filtering for JTDS. It gives readers a thorough understanding of the basic mathematical analysis and fundamentals, offers a straightforward treatment of the different topics and provides broad coverage of the recent methodologies.

Continuous optimization is the study of problems in which we wish to opti mize (either maximize or minimize) a continuous function (usually of several variables) often subject to a collection of restrictions on these variables. It has its foundation in the development of calculus by Newton and Leibniz in the 17*^ century. Nowadys, continuous optimization problems are widespread in the mathematical modelling of real world systems for a very broad range of applications. Solution methods for large multivariable constrained continuous optimiza tion problems using computers began with the work of Dantzig in the late 1940s on the simplex method for linear programming problems. Recent re search in continuous optimization has produced a variety of theoretical devel opments, solution methods and new areas of applications. It is impossible to give a full account of the current trends and modern applications of contin uous optimization. It is our intention to present a number of topics in order to show the spectrum of current research activities and the development of numerical methods and applications.

The authors of these papers are all acknowledged masters of their fields, having been chosen through a rigorous selection process by a distinguished International Program Committee. This volume presents an overview of contemporary applications of mathematics, with the coverage ranging from the rhythms of the nervous system, to optimal transportation, elasto-plasticity, computational drug design, hydrodynamic and meteorological modeling, and valuation in financial markets.
