Biosensors For Emerging And Re Emerging Infectious Diseases

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Biosensors for Emerging and Re-Emerging Infectious Diseases provides a review of how cornerstone optical, electronic, nanomaterial and data processing technologies can address detection issues occurring in a pandemic event. This book gives insights into the fundamental physical, chemical and biological mechanisms needed for such a type of detection. The content covers potential biomarkers which can be used for the infectious disease diagnostic, helping readers find the appropriate approach for the diagnosis of infectious diseases. It presents a novel approach to transferring the sensing platform from lab to application in clinics and to point of care detection. The book then moves on to discuss the function and efficiency of the biosensing platform in early diagnosis of infectious diseases compared to the standard methods. The required time, the technician skills and the steps which must be performed are other key factors of the biosensing platform which are well explained. - Covers applications of biosensors in diagnostics and detection of infection, and in the application of new materials in biosensor development - Presents nano-biosensor based point-of-care technologies - Introduces readers to the fundamentals of biosensors for infectious diseases

Germs Go Global

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Despite remarkable breakthroughs in medical research and advancements in immunization and treatments during the 20th cent., infectious diseases (ID) are undergoing a global resurgence that threaten everyone¿s health. Intelligence analysts argue that ¿newly emerging and re-emerging ID will pose a global health threat and will complicate U.S. and global security over the next 20 years.¿ This report examines what is known about a range of emerging ID and why they are potential threats to Amer. It also reviews the tools -- surveillance, diagnostics, vaccines, and therapeutics -- that exist or are in development and explores gov¿t. incentives for enhancing them. Recommends increased action to protect the nation from deadly and debilitating ID. Illus.

Handbook Of Biosensors And Biosensor Kinetics

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Biosensors are essential to an ever-expanding range of applications, including healthcare; drug design; detection of biological, chemical, and toxic agents; environmental monitoring; biotechnology; aviation; physics; oceanography; and the protection of civilian and engineering infrastructures. This book, like the previous five books on biosensors by this author (and one by the co-author), addresses the neglected areas of analyte-receptor binding and dissociation kinetics occurring on biosensor surfaces. Topics are covered in a comprehensive fashion, with homogeneous presentation for the benefit of the reader. The contributors address the economic aspects of biosensors and incorporate coverage of biosensor fabrication and nanobiosensors, among other topics. The comments, comparison, and discussion presented provides a better perspective of where the field of biosensors is heading. - Serves as a comprehensive resource on biosensor analysis - Examines timely topics such as biosensor fabrication and nanobiosensors - Covers economic aspects and medical applications (e.g., the role of analytes in controlling diabetes)

Emerging And Re Emerging Infectious Diseases An Issue Of Infectious Disease Clinics Of North America

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

In consultation with Consulting Editor, Dr. Helen Boucher, Drs. Zumla and Hui have assembled an excellent clinical overview of the current priorities in treating emerging and re-emerging infections. A number of landmark events have occurred in the area of epidemic infections. The frequency and diversity of serious and drug/antibiotic-resistant infections are increasing. New and re-emerging infectious disease outbreaks continue to cause much human suffering and loss of life worldwide. Current priority infectious diseases concerns that threaten global health security are covered in this issue: Cholera; Typhoid and antibiotic-resistant strains; multi—drug-resistant Tuberculosis; Invasive Meningococcal disease; Invasive Pneumococcal disease; antibiotic-resistant bacterial, viral, and protozoal infections; diphtheria; pandemic influenza; MERS; SARS; Measles; viral haemorrhagic fevers; wild-type Polio virus; Zika; antibiotic-resistant sexually transmitted diseases; drug-resistant Malaria; ARV-resistant HIV; and fungal infections. This issue’s clinical review articles, written by authoritative and renowned experts in the area would, have broad appeal, from general internists to respiratory specialists. It should also prove interesting to infectious diseases specialists, health practitioners in the tropics, pulmonologists, internal medicine fellows, family physicians, and health-care policy makers in the west and developing countries. Medical students, postgraduates, and research fellows (both undergraduates and postgraduates) will also find this issue useful and to be a updated reference in the field of respiratory medicine, tropical medicine, and infectious diseases.

Biological Weapons Defense

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

In 2003, the President’s budget for bioterrorism defense totalled more than $5 billion. Today, the nation’s top academic scientists are scrambling to begin work to understand Bacillus anthracis and develop new vaccines and drugs. However, just five years ago, only the US Department of Defense (DOD) seemed concerned about these “exotic” agents. In 1997, the DOD spent approximately $137 million on biodefense to protect the deployed force, while academe, industry, local governments, and most of our federal leadership was oblivious to, and in some cases doubtful of, the seriousness of the threat. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) received the largest budget increase in the organization’s history. Fortunately, during this time of national urgency, a sound base exists on which to build our defenses against this new threat. A relatively small cadre of dedicated scientists within the US Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (USAMRMC) laid this foundation over the past 20 years.
