BOOK EXCERPT:

What is it that Inspirational teachers do differently? In short, they plan for their pupils to be inspirational. Many teachers who join the teaching profession do so because they were taught by inadequate teachers and they feel they can provide a far better and more exciting education for youngsters than they received themselves. Whereas other teachers speak with clarity of detail about stimulating and influential teachers who inspired their lives and now they want to do the same. This book is an examination of what our most inspirational teachers do in order to get creative and inspirational responses from children. It aims to put fun back into teaching, provide a framework for creativity in the twenty first century and act as a book of hope for the new curriculum proposals.

Teaching Motivation For Student Engagement

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Helping teachers understand and apply theory and research is one of the most challenging tasks of teacher preparation and professional development. As they learn about motivation and engagement, teachers need conceptually rich, yet easy-to-use, frameworks. At the same time, teachers must understand that student engagement is not separate from development, instructional decision-making, classroom management, student relationships, and assessment. This volume on teaching teachers about motivation addresses these challenges. The authors share multiple approaches and frameworks to cut through the growing complexity and variety of motivational theories, and tie theory and research to real-world experiences that teachers are likely to encounter in their courses and classroom experiences. Additionally, each chapter is summarized with key “take away” practices. A shared perspective across all the chapters in this volume on teaching teachers about motivation is “walking the talk.” In every chapter, readers will be provided with rich examples of how research on and principles of classroom motivation can be re-conceptualized through a variety of college teaching strategies. Teachers and future teachers learning about motivation need to experience explicit modeling, practice, and constructive feedback in their college courses and professional development in order to incorporate those into their own practice. In addition, a core assumption throughout this volume is the importance of understanding the situated nature of motivation, and avoiding a “one-size-fits” all approach in the classroom. Teachers need to fully interrogate their instructional practices not only in terms of motivational principles, but also for their cultural relevance, equity, and developmental appropriateness. Just like P-12 students, college students bring their histories as learners and beliefs about motivation to their formal study of motivation. That is why college instructors teaching motivation must begin by helping students evaluate their personal beliefs and experiences. Relatedly, college instructors need to know their students and model differentiating their interactions to support each of them. The authors in this volume have, collectively, decades of experience teaching at the college level and conducting research in motivation, and provide readers with a variety of strategies to help teachers and future teachers explore how motivation is supported and undermined. In each chapter in this volume, readers will learn how college instructors can demonstrate what effective, motivationally supportive classrooms look, sound, and feel like.

Authenticity And Teacher Student Motivational Synergy

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Despite the common association between authenticity and motivation in language learning, there does not currently exist a single volume exploring these connections. This book looks at the relationship between authenticity and motivation by specifically viewing the process of mutually validating the act of learning as social authentication, which in turn can often lead to positive motivational synergy between students and teacher(s). The study at the centre of this book uses autoethnography and practitioner research to examine the complex relationship between authenticity and motivation in the foreign language learning classroom. In particular, it traces the links between student and teacher motivation, and proposes that authenticity can act as a bridge to connect learners to the classroom environment and engage with the activity of learning.

The Role Of Student Motivation In Teaching Arabic As A Second Language

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Essay from the year 2019 in the subject Didactics - Common Didactics, Educational Objectives, Methods, grade: A, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, language: English, abstract: Motivation plays a central role in second language learning and mastery. For several decades, many researchers have studied the concept of second language learning. In the quest for knowledge, researchers have studied several factors that help teach the second language. The value of this research is to help determine the importance of motivation in understanding Arabic as a second language in Dubai. Previous research has repeatedly pointed out the need to motivate students in their pursuit of knowledge in L2. Alizadeh (2016) notes that students' level of motivation determines how they can read and understand second languages. Motivation depends on various sources, notably static and dynamic forms. Dynamic causes are directly related to the learning environment of the learner. In the classical static motivation, learners draw their inspiration from their local communities' prior experiences. Dmour (2015) conclusively suggests that the entirety of motivation is a variable that keeps on changing with time. Previously, limited research on the mastery of Arabic as a second language was carried out.
