In 2021, the Indonesia economy has bounced back to almost at the condition before the COVID-19 pandemic. Confdence, in general, has been strong among Indonesians with the aim to rebuild the country better. Growth is expected to accelerate to escape the middle-income trap before 2045 and, at the same time, to transform to green economy. It has been argued, nevertheless, that, to achieve these goals, Indonesia needs to improve its qualities of institutions and human capital. This book is intended to discuss these issues as well as how they influence Indonesia’s development.

Most southeast Asian countries have until recently had a long period of rapid and reasonably equitable growth. This remarkable performace was achieved largely because sound policies were implemented effectively by capable institutions with competent staff. This is especially true in key policy areas such as macroeconomic management, product transformations, trade and investment promotion, and infrastructure development. Many developing economies in Asia and the Pacific, including the new and potentially new members of ASEAN, namely Camodia, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Myanmar and Viet Nam, which are facing enormous challenges resulting from domestic economic reforms and exposure to the international economy, could benefit from the experiences of institution and human resource capacity building in older ASEAN countries. This publication contains an overview and four country studies of Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand.

The entire planet looks to Asian and other emerging markets to sustain growth momentum as traditional markets in the USA and Europe struggle with the slow and arduous processes of deleveraging after the global financial crisis. At the same time, there is growing recognition in Asia that the sources of growth must shift to sustain their own growth momentum in the years ahead. Heavy reliance on the region’s high savings rates and plentiful supplies of low-cost labour will have to shift towards increasing the human capital embodied in more educated and skilled labour forces capable of contributing to productivity growth and innovation as future drivers of growth. Human Capital Formation and Economic Growth in Asia and the Pacific focuses on why and how countries are making this shift. The demographic transition is shown to be a significant factor as ageing populations in Japan, South Korea and China manage declining growth in the labour force by stepping up investments in education, and by changing policies and institutions. Lessons to be learned from these experiences by more youthful populations in Southeast Asia are explored. In addition, attention is paid to the consequences of cross-border differentials in technical knowledge and the quantity and quality of human capital. Several implications for public policy and for international cooperation on human-capital issues in the Asian region are identified. The chapters in this volume are edited versions of papers presented at the 35th Pacific Trade and Development conference held in Vancouver, Canada, in June 2012. The conference goal was to better understand how governments and business in Asia and the Pacific can apply the key insight that one of the reasons economies grow is because of human-capital formation – the quality and diversity of the labour force are augmented – not just because the labour force grows in size. Students of Asia’s growth prospects will find several aspects of this volume of particular value. It includes chapters on the big-picture conceptual and measurement issues; on country experiences in meeting the imperatives of the demographic transition and investing in education and skills training; and on country experiences with attracting foreign knowledge and the supply and recruitment of skills across borders in Asia and the Pacific. Policymakers will also find useful the discussions of policy implications and the menu of issues requiring intergovernmental cooperation within the Asian region.

Indonesia Assessment 1995 contains two main sections: one overviewing current Indonesian economic and political conditions, and one examining economic and social developments in Eastern Indonesia. This is the vast region of 25 million people, lying between Java, Malaysia, the Philippines and Australia. The book provides not only an up-do-date overview of Indonesia in 1995, but also one of the first comprehensive surveys of Eastern Indonesia, a rapidly growing but little known region of Southeast Asia. The Proceeding book presented the International Conference on Financial Forensics and Fraud, which is an international conference hosted by Universitas Hindu Indonesia in collaboration with Australasian Accounting, Business and Finance Journal. Asia continues to ascend as an economic powerhouse and a strategic priority for business leaders around the world, yet there is often limited understanding of the human capital systems that fuel the economic engines of the region. The field of Development Economics (DE) has overstretched over time with risks of becoming shallow. There is a need for the compartmentalization of DE that focuses on simplification, oversight, productivity and relevance. This volume is a handbook in development economics with a compartmentalized perspective. It makes use of case study applications, both recent and over the last few decades. Next to 2 introductory chapters that elaborate on the development regions, the book falls in five parts.The first part, consisting of two chapters, displays structural/system changes in the development regions, examines institutions that discourage/promote development, and applies institutional modelling to related case studies of land reform in India and Chile.The second part, consisting of two chapters, takes the courageous step of discussing, measuring and posting the twin development goals of growth with redistribution as the primary development goals, and analysing their trade-offs for major countries in the six development regions. Secondary development goals are important but they correlate with the primary goals, and are considered as conditional.The third part, consisting of eight chapters, contains applications on multi-sector development policies. The applications use the Social Accounting Matrix and related economy wide modelling. They highlight alternative policies to achieve the development goals of growth and redistribution in Pakistan, Indonesia, Korea, UAE, Nepal, Sudan, Suriname and other countries.The fourth part, consisting of six chapters, examines human resource development and policies in the areas of labor market information systems, labor market adjustments, manpower forecasts, earnings profiles, educational plans, and intergenerational mobility, with case studies related to Pakistan, Indonesia, Colombia, Korea, Ethiopia.The fifth and final part, consisting of two chapters, focuses on world development and global governance; in particular the persistent income disparities at the global level in spite of the strengthened positions of the development regions in the world economy, the consequences of shifting dominance for world governance, the evaluation of the G-20, and a proposed more representative world governance. Throughout all chapters special attention is devoted to introducing and applying analytical methods that have proven to be fundamental in development economics.
