BOOK EXCERPT:
This thesis is concerned with the development of interactive systems for smart environments. One of the characteristic of smart environments is the need to support different interaction paradigms at runtime. On the one hand interaction is performed explicitly: the user performs an action in order to interact with the system (e.g., pressing a button to adjust the light). On the other hand actions of the user are interpreted by the smart environment, even though they have not been performed primarily to interact with the system: implicit interactions (e.g., walking to the speaker's desk to give a talk). A smart environment tries to infer those interactions to assist the user in her work (e.g., display slides at the projection canvas). Both interaction paradigms originate from different research fields and are currently treated independently although implicit and explicit interaction mutually influence each other and occur interleaved. The thesis introduces a task modeling language in order to cope with the given requirements of smart environments which can be used to perform interaction development for smart environments in a model-based fashion for both interaction paradigms.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Learn to build custom SSIS tasks using Visual Studio Community Edition and Visual Basic. Bring all the power of Microsoft .NET to bear on your data integration and ETL processes, and for no added cost over what you’ve already spent on licensing SQL Server. If you already have a license for SQL Server, then you do not need to spend more money to extend SSIS with custom tasks and components. Why are custom components necessary? Because even though the SSIS catalog of built-in tasks and components is a marvel of engineering, there do remain gaps in the functionality that is provided. These gaps are especially relevant to enterprises practicing Data Integration Lifecycle Management (DILMS) and/or DevOps. One of the gaps is a limitation of the SSIS Execute Package task. Developers using the stock version of that task are unable to select SSIS packages from other projects. Yet it’s useful to be able to select and execute tasks across projects, and the example used throughout this book will help you to create an Execute Catalog Package task that does in fact allow you to execute a task from another project. Building on the example’s pattern, you can create any task that you like, custom tailored to your specific, data integration and ETL needs. What You Will Learn Configure and execute Visual Studio in the way that best supports SSIS task development Create a class library as the basis for an SSIS task, and reference the needed SSIS assemblies Properly sign assemblies that you create in order to invoke them from your task Implement source code control via Visual Studio Team Services, or your own favorite tool set Code not only your tasks themselves, but also the associated task editors Troubleshoot and then execute your custom tasks as part of your own project Who This Book Is For Database administrators and developers who are involved in ETL projects built around SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS). Readers should have a background in programming along with a desire to optimize their ETL efforts by creating custom-tailored tasks for execution from SSIS packages.

BOOK EXCERPT:
In 200, the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics (USD(AT & L)) directed the Defense Science Board (DSB) to study the precision targeting of air-delivered munitions. The results of the 2001 Task Force were well-received within Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD), and in June 2003, USD(AT & L) directed the DSB to study the closely related topic of "integrated fire support in the battlespace." In this new study the 2003 Task Force applied an approach and methodology similar to the 2001 effort but focused instead on ground-based fires, sea-based fires, and close-air support. As directed in its terms of reference (TOR), the 2003 Task Force assessed the following: ̂ The adequacy of current and proposed munitions, ̂ The timeliness and accuracy of ISR systems, ̂ the adequacy of battlefield C(exp 3) systems, and ̂ Impediments to integrated fires. From October 2003 through April 2004, the Task Force met monthly to gather information.

BOOK EXCERPT:
In practice, managers of mergers and acquisitions (M&A) draw their attention more and more to speed of integration within their M&A strategies. In a paradoxical manner, M&A research on speed of integration is still in its infancy and remains underdeveloped. Empirical findings reach from positive over negative to non-significant relationships between speed and M&A success. Carolin Proft develops a research model which encompasses task integration speed and human integration speed as independent variables influencing the dependent variable of M&A performance. She clarifies the question of how the success factor speed can be used as a tool to enhance M&A success. Based on the data collected from 101 German speaking companies she proves that task integration speed negatively influences M&A performance while human integration speed promotes M&A success. The present study is unique as it quantitatively demonstrates that the two types of integration occur at different levels of speed. Therefore, the M&A success significantly depends on the chronology of the two types of integration.
