th The 14 International Conference on Knowledge-Based and Intelligent Information and Engineering Systems was held during September 8–10, 2010 in Cardiff, UK. The conference was organized by the School of Engineering at Cardiff University, UK and KES International. KES2010 provided an international scientific forum for the presentation of the - sults of high-quality research on a broad range of intelligent systems topics. The c- ference attracted over 360 submissions from 42 countries and 6 continents: Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, China, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong ROC, Hungary, India, Iran, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Pakistan, Poland, Romania, Singapore, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Syria, Taiwan, - nisia, Turkey, UK, USA and Vietnam. The conference consisted of 6 keynote talks, 11 general tracks and 29 invited s- sions and workshops, on the applications and theory of intelligent systems and related areas. The distinguished keynote speakers were Christopher Bishop, UK, Nikola - sabov, New Zealand, Saeid Nahavandi, Australia, Tetsuo Sawaragi, Japan, Yuzuru Tanaka, Japan and Roger Whitaker, UK. Over 240 oral and poster presentations provided excellent opportunities for the presentation of interesting new research results and discussion about them, leading to knowledge transfer and generation of new ideas. Extended versions of selected papers were considered for publication in the Int- national Journal of Knowledge-Based and Intelligent Engineering Systems, Engine- ing Applications of Artificial Intelligence, Journal of Intelligent Manufacturing, and Neural Computing and Applications.

The tenth Portuguese Conference on Arti?cial Intelligence, EPIA 2001 was held in Porto and continued the tradition of previous conferences in the series. It returned to the city in which the ?rst conference took place, about 15 years ago. The conference was organized, as usual, under the auspices of the Portuguese Association for Arti?cial Intelligence (APPIA, http://www.appia.pt). EPIA maintained its international character and continued to provide a forum for p- senting and discussing researc h on di?erent aspects of Arti?cial Intelligence. To promote motivated discussions among participants, this conference streng- ened the role of the thematic workshops. These were not just satellite events, but rather formed an integral part of the conference, with joint sessions when justi?ed. This had the advantage that the work was presented to a motivated audience. This was the ?rst time that EPIA embarked on this experience and so provided us with additional challenges.

This Encyclopedia of Control Systems, Robotics, and Automation is a component of the global Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems EOLSS, which is an integrated compendium of twenty one Encyclopedias. This 22-volume set contains 240 chapters, each of size 5000-30000 words, with perspectives, applications and extensive illustrations. It is the only publication of its kind carrying state-of-the-art knowledge in the fields of Control Systems, Robotics, and Automation and is aimed, by virtue of the several applications, at the following five major target audiences: University and College Students, Educators, Professional Practitioners, Research Personnel and Policy Analysts, Managers, and Decision Makers and NGOs.

A special year like 1999 invites one to draw a balance of what has been achieved in the roughly 30 years of research and development in knowledge based systems (still abbreviated as XPS following the older term “expert systems”) and to take a look at th what the future may hold. For the 5 German conference on knowledge-based systems we therefore asked current and former speakers of the four working groups (FG’s) in the subdivision of knowledge-based systems (FA 1.5) of the German association of Informatics (GI) to present a survey of and future prospects for their respective fields: knowledge engineering, diagnosis, configuration, and case-based reasoning. An additional 14 technical papers deal with current topics in knowledge-based systems with an equal emphasis on methods and applications. They are selected from more than 50 papers accepted in the 4 parallel workshops of XPS-99: a) Knowledge Management, Organizational Memory and Reuse, b) various fields of applications, c) the traditional PuK Workshop (planning and configuration), and d) the GWCBR (German workshop on case-based reasoning). The other papers presented at these workshops are not included in this volume but are available as internal reports of Würzburg university together with the exhibition guide that emphasizing tool support for building knowledge based systems.

The symposium had two main aims, to investigate the state-of-the-art in the application of artificial intelligence techniques in real-time control, and to bring together control system specialists, artificial intelligence specialists and end-users. Many professional engineers working in industry feel that the gap between theory and practice in applying control and systems theory is widening, despite efforts to develop control algorithms. Papers presented at the meeting ranged from the theoretical aspects to the practical applications of artificial intelligence in real-time control. Themes were: the methodology of artificial intelligence techniques in control engineering; the application of artificial intelligence techniques in different areas of control; and hardware and software requirements. This symposium showed that there exist alternative possibilities for control based on artificial intelligence techniques.

The book presents logical foundations for rule-based systems. An attempt has been made to provide an in-depth discussion of logical and other aspects of such systems, including languages for knowledge representation, inference mechanisms, inference control, design and verification. The ultimate goal was to provide a deeper theoretical insight into the nature of rule-based systems and put together the most complete presentation including details so frequently skipped in typical textbooks. The book may be useful to potentially wide audience, but it is aimed at providing specific knowledge for graduate, post-graduate and Ph.D. students, as well as knowledge engineers and research workers involved in the domain of AI. It also constitutes a summary of the Author’s research and experience gathered through several years of his research work.

CAD (Computer Aided Design) technology is now crucial for every division of modern industry, from a viewpoint of higher productivity and better products. As technologies advance, the amount of information and knowledge that engineers have to deal with is constantly increasing. This results in seeking more advanced computer technology to achieve higher functionalities, flexibility, and efficient performance of the CAD systems. Knowledge engineering, or more broadly artificial intelligence, is considered a primary candidate technology to build a new generation of CAD systems. Since design is a very intellectual human activity, this approach seems to make sense. The ideas of intelligent CAD systems (ICAD) are now increasingly discussed everywhere. We can observe many conferences and workshops reporting a number of research efforts on this particular subject. Researchers are coming from computer science, artificial intelligence, mechanical engineering, electronic engineering, civil engineering, architectural science, control engineering, etc. But, still we cannot see the direction of this concept, or at least, there is no widely accepted concept of ICAD. What can designers expect from these future generation CAD systems? In which direction must developers proceed? The situation is somewhat confusing.
