Recently, we have seen a steep increase in the popularity and adoption of XML, in areas such as traditional databases, e-business, the scientific environment, and on the web. Querying XML documents and data efficiently is a challenging issue; this book approaches search on XML data by combining content-based methods from information retrieval and structure-based XML query methods and presents the following parts: applications, query languages, retrieval models, implementing intelligent XML systems, and evaluation. To appreciate the book, basic knowledge of traditional database technology, information retrieval, and XML is needed. The book is ideally suited for courses or seminars at the graduate level as well as for education of research and development professionals working on Web applications, digital libraries, database systems, and information retrieval.

This volume contains the proceedings of the seventeenth Jurix conference on Legal Knowledge and Information Systems (Jurix 2004), which was held at the Harnack Haus of the Max Planck Society, in Berlin, Germany. Although the Jurix conference moved from The Netherlands to Germany, almost half of the papers are from The Netherlands. Except for a paper from Canada, the others are from 5 other countries in Western Europe. The effort to extend Jurix beyond The Netherlands and establish it as the leading European conference on legal knowledge systems is making progress. The papers in this publication focus on the topics of legal knowledge management and information retrieval; legal knowledge acquisition using natural language processing; legal ontologies; case-based reasoning; reasoning about evidence and legal reasoning support.

This conference provided an international forum for technical discussion on conceptual modeling of information systems among researchers, developers and users. This was the third time that this conference was held in Asia; the?rst time was in Singapore in 1998 and the second time was in Yokohama, Japan in 2001. China is the third largest nation with the largest population in the world. Shanghai, the largest city in China and a great metropolis, famous in Asia and throughout the world, is therefore a most appropriate location to host this conference. This volume contains papers selected for presentation and includes the two keynote talks by Prof. Hector Garcia-Molina and Prof. Gerhard Weikum, and an invited talk by Dr. Xiao Ji. This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Second International XML Database Symposium, XSym 2004, held in Toronto, Canada in August 2004 in association with VLDB 2004. The 15 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from around 60 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on Xquery processing, searching, ranking, and mapping XML documents; XML constraints checking and correcting; XML processing; and clustering, indexing, and statistics.

The workshops were an excellent basis for intense and highly fruitful discussions. The quality and quantity of papers show that the areas of interest for the workshops are highly active. A large number of excellent researchers are working on the aforementioned ?elds producing research output that is not only of interest for other researchers but also for industry. The organizers and participants of the workshops were highly satis?ed with the output. The high quality of the presenters and workshop participants contributed to the success of each workshop. The amazing environment of Heraklion and the location of the EDBT conference also contributed to the overall success. Last, but not least, our sincere thanks to the conference organizers – the organizing team was always willing to help and if there were things that did not work, assistance was quickly available.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-workshop proceedings of the 8th International Workshop of the Initiative for the Evaluation of XML Retrieval, INEX 2009, held in Brisbane, Australia, in December 2009. The aim of the INEX 2009 workshop was to bring together researchers in the field of XML IR who participated in the INEX 2009 campaign. During the past year, participating organizations contributed to the building of large-scale XML test collections by creating topics, performing retrieval runs and providing relevance assessments. The workshop concluded the results of this effort, summarized and addressed issues encountered, and devised a work plan for the future evaluation of XML retrieval systems. The 42 full papers presented together with 3 invited papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 49 submissions.
