International Economic Integration and Domestic Performance brings together the essays of Mary E Lovely focused on the relationship between international economic integration and domestic performance. It is a collection of sole-authored and co-authored papers that have been published in various scholarly journals over the last two decades. The first section considers the welfare effects and optimal design of retail sales taxes when consumers can avoid taxation by crossing jurisdictional boundaries. The second section highlights the role of scale economies in the design of industrial policies and as a determinant of firm location. The third section explores the influence of environmental policy on foreign investor's location decisions and the role of trade and technology on country's environmental regulation. This book explores the relationship between cultural diversity and international economic integration and its implications for global governance of the audio-visual sector. The national audio-visual policies of a number of countries - including Canada, Egypt, France, Germany, Italy, India and the UK - are compared in order to assess their potential impacts and restrictive effects on international trade and investment. The variety of approaches used by the contributors reflects the wide differences among national audio-visual systems and offers a rich perspective on how they can be analyzed. The lessons drawn from these national case studies are placed in context by up-to-date original analysis of the constraints arising from the WTO system. Scholars and professionals in the audio-visual sector and in international trade negotiations would be interested in the issues discussed in the book, given their importance in shaping the institutional environment of cultural and economic activities in the audio-visual sector.

This study of India's political economy provides a thorough examination of one critique of globalization, that it causes economic segmentation, and possibly disintegration, of the national economy as some sectors benefit and others are left behind. Economic segmentation is the breaking up of national markets, resulting in distinct winners and losers. Nayar's examination challenges this critique by demonstrating that, on balance, the active role of the Indian state in the areas of economic planning, fiscal federalism, and tax reform has resulted in improved economic integration, not increased segmentation. Similarly, his investigation of trade, investment, entrepreneurship, and migration, all reveal tendencies inherent in the market in favor of economic integration, especially when assisted by the state. Nayar's findings lead to the conclusion that while globalization both offers benefits (greater economic growth) and involves costs (external shocks), India's experience since its opening in 1991 suggests that India has benefited from, more than been victimized, by globalization.

Regional economic integration has become a key force in international commercial policy in the 2000s. Europe has traditionally embraced regionalism; the United States became actively involved in preferential trading arrangements only in the 1980s. While Asia has been late in accepting formal regional economic integration accords, all Asian countries are now in the process of creating various free-trade areas and other forms of economic integration programs, and some are already in place. This volume analyzes the regionalism trend from an Asian perspective.
