Introduction To Mathematical Thinking

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

"Mathematical thinking is not the same as 'doing math'--unless you are a professional mathematician. For most people, 'doing math' means the application of procedures and symbolic manipulations. Mathematical thinking, in contrast, is what the name reflects, a way of thinking about things in the world that humans have developed over three thousand years. It does not have to be about mathematics at all, which means that many people can benefit from learning this powerful way of thinking, not just mathematicians and scientists."--Back cover.

Developing Mathematical Thinking

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

In this country we have done a poor job of helping students come to see the wonder, beauty and power of mathematics. Standards can be brought into the picture, but unless we think about what it means to truly engage students in mathematics we will continue to be unsuccessful. The goal of this book is to begin to change the way students experience mathematics in the middle and high school classrooms. In this book you will find a theoretical basis for this approach to teaching mathematics, multiple guides and questions for teachers to think about in relation to their everyday teaching, and over 30 examples of problems, lessons, tasks, and projects that been used effectively with urban students.

Mathematical Thought

BOOK EXCERPT:

In contributing a foreword to this book I am complying with a wish my husband expressed a few days before his death. He had completed the manuscript of this work, which may be considered a companion volume to his book Formal Methods. The task of seeing it through the press was undertaken by Mr. J. J. A. Mooij, acting director of the Institute for Research in Foundations and the Philosophy of Science (Instituut voor Grondslagenonderzoek en Filoso:fie der Exacte Wetenschappen) of the University of Amsterdam, with the help of Mrs. E. M. Barth, lecturer at the Institute. I wish to thank Mr. Mooij and Mrs. Barth most cordially for the care with which they have acquitted themselves of this delicate task and for the speed with which they have brought it to completion. I also wish to express my gratitude to Miss L. E. Minning, M. A. , for the helpful advice she has so kindly given to Mr. Mooij and Mrs. Barth during the proof reading. C. P. C. Mathematical Thinking

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This textbook invites readers to explore mathematical thinking by finding the beauty in the subject. With an accessible tone and stimulating puzzles, the author will convince curious non-mathematicians to continue their studies in the area. It has an expansive scope, covering everything from probability and graph theory to infinities and Newton’s method. Many examples of proofs appear as well, offering readers the opportunity to explore these topics with the amount of rigor that suits them. Programming exercises in Python are also included to show how math behaves in action. Mathematical Thinking is an ideal textbook for transition courses aimed at undergraduates moving from lower level to more advanced topics, as well as for math recruitment and invitational courses at the freshman or sophomore level. It may also be of interest in computer science departments and can be used as a supplemental text for courses in discrete mathematics and graph theory.

Adults Mathematical Thinking And Emotions

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The crisis around teaching and learning of mathematics and its use in everyday life and work relate to a number of issues. These include: The doubtful transferability of school maths to real life contexts, the declining participation in A level and higher education maths courses, the apparent exclusion of some groups, such as women and the aversion of many people to maths. This book addresses these issues by considering a number of key problems in maths education and numeracy: *differences among social groups, especially those related to gender and social class *the inseparability of cognition and emotion in mathematical activity *the understanding of maths anxiety in traditional psychological, psychoanalytical and feminist theories *how adults' numerate thinking and performance must be understood in context. The author's findings have practical applications in education and training, such as clarifying problems of the transfer of learning, and of countering maths anxiety.

Mathematical Thinking And Problem Solving

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

In the early 1980s there was virtually no serious communication among the various groups that contribute to mathematics education -- mathematicians, mathematics educators, classroom teachers, and cognitive scientists. Members of these groups came from different traditions, had different perspectives, and rarely gathered in the same place to discuss issues of common interest. Part of the problem was that there was no common ground for the discussions -- given the disparate traditions and perspectives. As one way of addressing this problem, the Sloan Foundation funded two conferences in the mid-1980s, bringing together members of the different communities in a ground clearing effort, designed to establish a base for communication. In those conferences, interdisciplinary teams reviewed major topic areas and put together distillations of what was known about them.* A more recent conference -- upon which this volume is based -- offered a forum in which various people involved in education reform would present their work, and members of the broad communities gathered would comment on it. The focus was primarily on college mathematics, informed by developments in K-12 mathematics. The main issues of the conference were mathematical thinking and problem solving.

Mathematical Modelling In Education Research And Practice

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

In this volume cultural, social and cognitive influences on the research and teaching of mathematical modelling are explored from a variety of theoretical and practical perspectives. The authors of the current volume are all members of the International Community of Teachers of Mathematical Modelling and Applications, the peak research body in this field. A distinctive feature of this volume is the high number of authors from South American countries. These authors bring quite a different perspective to modelling than has been showcased in previous books in this series, in particular from a cultural point of view. As well as recent international research, there is a strong emphasis on pedagogical issues including those associated with technology and assessment, in the teaching and learning of modelling. Applications at various levels of education are exemplified. The contributions reflect common issues shared globally and represent emergent or on-going challenges.

Supporting Mathematical Thinking

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

To what extent do curriculum subjects, particularly highly abstract ones such as Mathematics, have their own unique special needs? This book celebrates the work done by subject specialists in mainstream classrooms to promote inclusive practice. It describes new and creative ways of developing mathematical thinking among pupils. Each chapter demonstrates reflective minds at work, close observation of learners, willingness to understand the students’ thinking process and patient commitment to students over long periods of time. Features of the book include: how low-attaining students can think mathematically numeracy recovery task refusal in primary mathematics progression in written calculation strategies for division using graphic calculators with low-attaining pupils generalising arithmetic: an alternative to algebra learning support assistants in mathematics lessons inclusion and entitlement, equality of opportunity and quality of curriculum provision.
