BOOK EXCERPT:
Male-female detective pairings often exhibit offbeat, dark humor and considerable chemistry as they investigate crimes. They have proven to be both entertaining and alluring on screen and television. This work reveals an evolutionary progression in the depictions of three detective duos: the married pair Nick and Nora Charles of The Thin Man, black-humored special agents John Steed and Emma Peel of The Avengers, and finally the smoldering Mulder and Scully in The X-Files. Ten chapters offer critical analysis, rich with background information and insider observations. Production comments are given throughout. Three appendices (one for each series) offer episode guides with original broadcast dates, credits and brief synopses.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Dental anomalies of number, shape, and position are frequently analysed in the orthodontic and clinical literature but are rarely discussed in an anthropological or archaeological context. Dental anomalies and occlusal disorders are often hypothesised to be the result of a modern, urbanised lifestyle as a response to reduced masticatory stress and subsequent crowding of the dentition. This study of skulls from Classical to medieaval Macedonia and England examines the relationship between craniofacial variation and the expression of dental anomalies. Standard craniometric measurements were taken to estimate relative sizes of cranial functional complexes and determine whether or not, or to what extent, changes in the shape or size of these variables were associated with the expression of dental anomalies. Statistical analyses determined that the null hypothesis, that there is no relationship between craniometrics and dental anomalies, can be rejected. A number of dental anomalies were found to have a relationship with reduced sizes in cranial and masticatory elements, although dental crowding was not as significant a factor in masticatory complex reduction. A cause and effect relationship cannot be determined but the data presented here suggests that both heredity and environmental causes may be influential in the expression of dental anomalies.

BOOK EXCERPT:
After a long hiatus, mood and emotions (collectively known as affect) are enjoying a strong resurgence in many areas of psychology. Vis-a-is the workplace, Affective Events Theory predicts that stochastic workplace events influence workplace affect, which in turn influences various workplace behaviors relevant to job performance. Moreover, like the events and affect that precede them, these behaviors are highly volatile within persons over time. The present set of research projects were designed to test, and extend, Affective Events Theory. The research focuses on the contextual or discretionary aspects of job performance--namely, organizational citizenship behavior and counterproductive (deviant) work behavior. These behaviors, typically studied at the between-person level, were shown in the present research to be highly volatile within persons over time and reliably related to affect. Moreover, within persons, citizenship and counterproductive behavior were themselves virtually unrelated. Finally, experiencing a common form of counterproductive behavior was associated with enacting similar behavior as well as other forms of counterproductive behavior. The results are relevant to the Army's continued search for the good Soldier: one who engages in citizenship behavior and refrains from counterproductive/deviant behavior.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Evidence is presented which indicates that a strong contributing factor for the frequency maximum in the Western Pacific area is its favorable position with respect to an active cyclogenetic region near the Bering Sea-Aleutian Island area. Monthly typhoon incidence was found to be significantly correlated with pressureheight anomalies in this region. The position and intensity of the western section of the subtropical ridge were also related to typhoon frequency but to a lesser extent. A modified Hovmoller diagram was prepared and analyzed for the 1956 typhoon season in order to examine on a daily synoptic basis the relationships derived from monthly mean data. The results suggests that there is an interaction between intensifying distal troughs in the circumpolar westerlies and troughs in the easterlies such that perturbational energy released into the easterlies is propagated through amplification of downstream troughs and ridges.
