BOOK EXCERPT:
First published in 1992, this book represents the first major attempt to compile a bibliography of Derrida’s work and scholarship about his work. It attempts to be comprehensive rather than selective, listing primary and secondary works from the year of Derrida’s Master’s thesis in 1954 up until 1991, and is extensively annotated. It arranges under article type a huge number of works from scholars across numerous fields — reflecting the interdisciplinary and controversial nature of Deconstruction. The substantial introduction and annotations also make this bibliography, in part, a critical guide and as such will make a highly useful reference tool for those studying his philosophy.

BOOK EXCERPT:
'Lovers and Knowers' discusses the development of the American cultural Left in the twentieth century. Seeking to contribute to the discussion of the relation between American Studies and the field of theory, the book focuses on the analysis of a specific theoretical problem. It attempts to elucidate the multilayered complexity of the relation between antifoundationalists and foundationalists, antitheorists and theorists, and (liberal) ironists and metaphysicians. Proposing the idea of an antifoundationalist and antiessentialist worldly and oppositional criticism, the study argues that it is possible to develop a postmetaphysical thinking whose notion of the political and whose understanding of the function of literary and cultural criticism clearly differ from those suggested by neopragmatists such as Richard Rorty and Stanley Fish. It is demonstrated that Cornel West's leftist version of neopragmatism, striving for consequences of theory in history, ought to be regarded as an oppositional and worldly criticism (in the Saidian sense) which dialectically uses the insights of (neo)pragmatist antifoundationalism.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This volume focuses on the multi-faceted significance of religion in African-American literature and culture of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The series of essays addresses religion as part of the self-empowerment of African-American women as itinerant preachers, the curious intermingling of Catholicism and Voodoo in Louisiana Creole culture, the representation of Obeah women, and the tradition of the folk sermon in James Weldon Johnson. The Harlem Renaissance provides the backdrop for the discussion of Afro-Modernism and religion in Claude McKay's and Jean Toomer's works, for the analysis of African-American folk plays by Richard Bruce and Georgia Douglas Johnson, and a comparison of Nella Larsen's and Ralph Ellison's critical views of religion as well as an illustration of the connections between spiritual search and the blues in Ellison's works. Discussions of the contemporary scene include the poetry of Robert Hayden, twentieth-century African-American intellectuals' views on religion and history and the acceptance of the Nation of Islam as an American religion.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Using a Derridean deconstruction approach, this book examines the course by which the history of modernity and colonialism has constructed an idea of Ireland, produced more often as a citation than an actuality.
