BOOK EXCERPT:

Twenty-five years have passed since the secret murder of Mr. Amazing and Baxter McGill by their creator, the enigmatic Dr. Janus. A mysterious man starts to piece together long-forgotten events, playing a deadly game of cat and mouse and is getting closer to exposing the truth while being followed by his own mysterious shadow. Meanwhile, Max Tromm, the world’s richest man, plans his metamorphosis into a superhuman and his grim vision for a new world with him as Earth's Emperor, with only Agent X (Mr. Amazing’s deadly and possibly psychotic replacement) standing in his way. Janus tells the story of the fight for humanity’s future and safety, and what it means to be super, and what it means to be a hero. Janus is an exciting, fast-paced, transgressive, and funny story that introduces new characters and continues the adventures from the first installment, The Three Lives of Mr. Amazing.

Self Propelled Janus Particles

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Design and operation of Janus particles have a great potential for applications in fields such as environmental remediation, electronic engineering, bio-imaging, bio-sensing, drug delivery and other biomedical tasks. Current research aims to imitate the molecular motors of biological systems by creating micro- and nano-scale particles which can exploit chemical energy so as to produce directional motion. The assembling of self-propelled particles and their movement can be controlled by using external fields, especially magnetic fields. The book references 332 original resources and includes their direct web link for in-depth reading. Keywords: Janus Particles, Bio-imaging, Bio-sensing, Drug Delivery, Environmental Remediation, Electronic Engineering, Asymmetrical Colloidal Particles, Catalysis-propelled Particles , Nanoscale Engines, Chemical Asymmetry, Self-propulsion, Diffusiophoresis, Electrophoresis, Thermophoresis, Bubble Generation, External Propulsion, Radiation Effects, Electric Field, Magnetic Field, Gravitaxis, Barrier Effects.

Janus Particle Synthesis Self Assembly And Applications

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Named after the two-faced roman god, Janus particles have gained much attention due to their potential in a variety of applications, including drug delivery. This is the first book devoted to Janus particles and covers their methods of synthesis, how these particles self-assemble, and their possible uses. By following the line of synthesis, self-assembly and applications, the book not only covers the fundamental and applied aspects, but it goes beyond a simple summary and offers a logistic way of selecting the proper synthetic route for Janus particles for certain applications. Written by pioneering experts in the field, the book introduces the Janus concept to those new to the topic and highlights the most recent research progress on the topic for those active in the field and catalyze new ideas.

Soft Hard And Hybrid Janus Structures Synthesis Self Assembly And Applications

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book investigates recent progress in synthesis of soft, hard and hybrid Janus structures and looks at processing strategy, such as emulsion polymerization, microfluidics, co-jetting and seeded growth. Also reviewed are both the experimental and theoretical studies on the unique self-assembly behaviour of Janus particles.Janus particles are special types of nanoparticles whose surfaces have two or more distinct physical properties. These two hemistructures are of different composition and functionality, offering promising potential for application through the multiple combinations possible — areas in which Janus structures can be applied include drug delivery, magnetic biomarkers, bactericides, tailored plasmon resonance, photocatalysis and nanoengines. Encapsulating a wealth of research on Janus structures, this review of the literature is specifically designed to benefit graduate students and researchers in the fields of chemistry, materials science, engineering, biotechnology and applied physics, as well as practitioners in these industries.

The Janus Point

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

What is time? The Janus Point offers a ground-breaking solution to one of the greatest mysteries in physics. For over a century, the greatest minds have sought to understand why time seems to flow in one direction, ever forward. In The Janus Point, Julian Barbour offers a radically new answer: it doesn't. At the heart of this book, Barbour provides a new vision of the Big Bang - the Janus Point - from which time flows in two directions, its currents driven by the expansion of the universe and the growth of order in the galaxies, planets and life itself. What emerges is not just a revolutionary new theory of time, but a hopeful argument about the destiny of our universe. 'Both a work of literature and a masterpiece of scientific thought' Lee Smolin, author of The Trouble with Physics 'Profound...original...accessible to anyone who has pondered the mysteries of space and time' Martin Rees, Astronomer Royal 'Takes on fundamental questions, offering a new perspective on how the Universe started and where it may be headed' Science Magazine

The Janus Fluid

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The state-of-the-art in the theoretical statistical physics treatment of the Janus fluid is reported with a bridge between new research results published in journal articles and a contextual literature review. Recent Monte Carlo simulations on the Kern and Frenkel model of the Janus fluid have revealed that in the vapor phase, below the critical point, there is the formation of preferred inert clusters made up of a well-defined number of particles: the micelles and the vesicles. This is responsible for a re-entrant gas branch of the gas-liquid binodal. Detailed account of this findings are given in the first chapter where the Janus fluid is introduced as a product of new sophisticated synthesis laboratory techniques. In the second chapter a cluster theory is developed to approximate the exact clustering properties stemming from the simulations. It is shown that the theory is able to reproduce semi-quantitatively the micellization phenomenon.

The Hope Of Janus

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Pope Paul VII has just reluctantly abdicated. Dante Sabatini, head of the feared Praetorian Order, is preparing to seize control of the Vatican and install Cardinal Charles Ambrosia on the papal throne. In a move to cripple those who oppose him, Sabatini commissions his private assassin, Angelica, to eliminate, through a deadly solution, the problems posed by the island nation of Janus. As turmoil overtakes the peaceful islanders, they must reconcile their commitment to understanding and tolerance against the harsh realities threatening to destroy their centuries-old way of life. While fear and tension stalk Janus, the resulting chaos and violence finally force Sean Brennan to decide the future he wants. As events spiral far beyond his control, Sean is left with two choices: to work with the Spirit to take the islands message to the world and achieve global reconciliation or return to his former life in London, forever ending any possibility of a future on Janus with his fiance, Diane. In this continuing tale, peaceful islanders attempt to overcome a brutal tragedy and further retribution instigated by a corrupt Vatican while Sean faces an agonizing decision whether to let hope in the future be his guide or accept that not all dreams are destined to become reality.
