Drawing on the author’s own experience as a student and a teacher in England and Japan, this book is a comparative study of boys’ secondary schools in these two countries. By comparing two nations that are very different in their history, culture, and geographical location, and by focusing on schools that are affordable to the majority of the population, the analysis carried out in this book takes the onus away from money, national culture, and religion, allowing for a more insightful understanding of those elements of schooling, which prove essential to successful class reproduction and those that are contingent. The book also explores the experiences of boys who do not fit orthodox images of heterosexual masculinity, discussing their interaction with teenage subcultures which encourage non-conformity to middle-class norms. Representing a novel contribution to the understanding of the relationship between education, gender, and class, this book will be a valuable resource to scholars and students of education studies, Japanese studies, and the sociology of education.

This book provides a detailed description of Japan’s telecommunications policies. It discusses how Japan has addressed a variety of policy challenges ranging from traditional regulatory issues, such as the provision of a universal service, to the latest tasks, including the promotion of cutting-edge technologies. Japan is a global leader in information and communication technologies (ICT). In addition to technological advances, an impressive nationwide optical-fiber and advanced mobile network infrastructure has been developed, which has boosted the economy and benefited society. The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) has played an important role in ICT deployment. Japan has a unique ICT policy framework that does not separate regulation and promotion, unlike many other countries, which have an independent regulator. However, since relatively little information has been provided in English, it has been difficult to learn much about Japan’s policies. Written by specialists from MIC, industry and academia, this is the first collaborative work to provide a comprehensive discussion of Japan’s ICT policies, allowing readers to gain an understanding of the topic.

This two-volume set LNCS 12184 and 12185 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Thematic Area on Human Interface and the Management of Information, HIMI 2020, held as part of HCI International 2020 in Copenhagen, Denmark.* HCII 2020 received a total of 6326 submissions, of which 1439 papers and 238 posters were accepted for publication after a careful reviewing process. Cheng articulates the extent to which knowledge management approaches can create Intellectual Capital (IC) and contribute to improvements in education quality. He argues that public schools have long contended with the requirements of quality assurance in a competitive environment of decreasing student numbers, increasing parental choice and rising standards of accountability. As public organisations, schools have to demonstrate appropriate resource management and show evidence that they are meeting defined development plans and goals. Cheng proposes a strategic approach, IC management, to help schools respond to and cope with the increasingly competitive environment while enhancing school capacity for improving student learning. First, the book guides readers to understand the development of IC theory in the context of education to address the requirements of quality assurance and accountability.
