Jesus And The Victory Of God Reissue

BOOK EXCERPT:

In this highly anticipated volume, N. T. Wright focuses directly on the historical Jesus: Who was he? What did he say? And what did he mean by it? Wright begins by showing how the questions posed by Albert Schweitzer a century ago remain central today. Then he sketches a profile of Jesus in terms of his prophetic praxis, his subversive stories, the symbols by which he reordered his world, and the answers he gave to the key questions that any world view must address. The examination of Jesus' aims and beliefs, argued on the basis of Jesus' actions and their accompanying riddles, is sure to stimulate heated response. Wright offers a provocative portrait of Jesus as Israel's Messiah who would share and bear the fate of the nation and would embody the long-promised return of Israel's God to Zion.

Tom Wright For Everyone

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Tom Wright for Everyone addresses the reticence of many evangelicals to engage with what Tom Wright has been saying for some time. The book looks at key theological questions awaiting an answer and gives an enlightening summary of the theology of Tom Wright, arranged around terms like 'Covenant' 'Heaven' 'Kingdom' 'The resurrection of Jesus' and 'justification' Then, in perhaps the most valuable part of the book, Stephen Kuhrt describes in detail the difference putting Tom Wright's theology into practice has made in his own parish church, pastorally and in terms of mission. The book ends with a clear statement of Tom Wright's challenge to the Church in the second decade of the twenty-first century.

Mark Challenges The Aeneid

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Most scholars believe that Mark wrote his Gospel to the Romans. True: but in addition to presenting the Gospel to the Romans, Mark actually contextualized his Gospel by challenging the leading propaganda of his day, Virgil’s Aeneid. The Roman poet, Virgil, wrote his masterpiece epic poem, the Aeneid, to promote the myth that Caesar Augustus was the son of god. The Aeneid went viral almost immediately upon publication in 19 BC, becoming Rome’s premier piece of propaganda that promoted Augustus as the emperor who would bring peace to the world. Within the first century, the Aeneid reached from Masada to northern Britain and became a foundational piece of Roman education. Mark’s mother, Mary, and his uncle, Joseph/Barnabas, raised him in wealth, and educated him in the four languages of Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek, and Latin. They drew him to Jesus, and Barnabas took Mark on the first missionary journey. Mark spent time with Peter in Rome, where Mark wrote his Gospel in Greek. Mark most certainly had direct access to the most influential piece of Latin literature, the Aeneid, and he wrote his masterpiece Gospel comparing Augustus with Jesus, the true Son of God.

Romans

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Until now, most commentaries on biblical texts have reflected the cultural and philosophical biases of the commentator, not those of the biblical author. This has resulted in either missing or misconstruing the intent of the original writer, to the detriment of genuine understanding. Paul's letter to the Romans, in particular, has suffered from this treatment, and the varying and conflicting conclusions reached have led to many of the controversies that now bedevil the church. In this commentary, the Rev. Robert McLeod uses the tools of Hebrew rhetoric that guided the thoughts and words of the apostle Paul as he wrote Romans, to reveal new and revolutionary aspects of what his message was to his Roman audience and to us today. This commentary is of interest to all who are concerned with evangelism, ecumenism, or simply finding peace with God.
