BOOK EXCERPT:
When Jesus of Nazareth began proclaiming the kingdom of God early in the first century, he likely had no intention of starting a new religion, especially one that included former pagans. Yet a new religion did eventually develop--one that not only included non-Jews but was soon dominated by them. How did this happen? Jesus Followers in the Roman Empire by Paul Duff offers an accessible and informed account of Christian origins, beginning with the teaching of Jesus and moving to the end of the first century. Duff's narrative shows how the rural Jewish movement led by Jesus developed into a largely non-Jewish phenomenon permeating urban centers of the Roman Empire. Paying special attention to social, cultural, and religious contexts--as well as to early Christian ideas about idolatry, marriage, family, slavery, and ethnicity--Jesus Followers in the Roman Empire will help readers cultivate a deeper understanding of the identity, beliefs, and practices of early Christ-believers.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Mankind has an inglorious history of using people of different nationalities or religions as scapegoats for failure. In the early centuries of the Common Era, the wrath of the ruling state fell on those who followed the new religion of Christianity. This book describes the foundations of these periodic crackdowns, provides a timeline of the persecutions, and outlines the aftermath of nearly three centuries of torture and martyrdom.

From a Korean perspective, this book examines how Luke's Passion Narrative constructs the space-time of the Reign of God both in contest to and in compliance with that of Rome and shows how Luke's colonial relations complicate the Gospel's theological perspectives.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Was Jesus a public figure? A political figure? Yes, according to Luke's gospel, Jesus was a Christ who was both public and political. Recent developments in the theory and practice of the study of space have provided tools to classify ancient social-spatial spheres with greater nuance and depth. A broad survey of literary and archaeological resources in the ancient world, as well as an in-depth look at Plutarch's Political Precepts and Philostratus's Life of Apollonius, reveals that the familiar dichotomy of public and private does not suffice to describe the Hellenistic-Roman milieu that shaped the author and audience of the third gospel. This study employs social-spatial analysis to explore how Luke uses the power of place to portray Jesus frequently engaging the unofficial public sphere and local politics, specifically in 18:35--19:43--the public healing of the blind beggar, the unexpected impact of Zacchaeus's hospitality, the political implications of the parable of the king and his subjects, and the publicity and politics of Jesus' entry into Jerusalem. The result is an illuminating look at the overall spatial character of Luke's gospel, the development of Christianity in the latter half of the first century, and the role of place in contemporary Christianity.

BOOK EXCERPT:
“Jesus for Most People” is for people who believe God used the Big Bang to create the universe, used evolution to create people, and sent Jesus to teach. The book updates the Enlightenment outlook. It summarizes scholarly work on Jesus and the early Church. It explains the biological evolution of morality and it looks there for clues about God. Some ideas here about Jesus and about the evolution of morality are new but not silly. The book builds a solid base for reasonable belief, so people can avoid religious and secular wackiness.

BOOK EXCERPT:
How did the movement founded by Jesus transform more in the first seventy-five years after his death than it has in the two thousand years since? This book tells the story of how the Christian movement, which began as relatively informal, rural, Hebrew and Aramaic speaking, and closely anchored to the Jewish synagogue, became primarily urban, Greek speaking, and gentile by the early second century, spreading through the Greco-Roman world with a mission agenda and church organization distinct from its roots in Jewish Galilee. It also shows how the early church's witness can encourage the church today.
