In the articles included in this collection, Professor Daniel argues that Abbot Joachim of Fiore was a disciple of Bernard of Clairvaux whose tertius status was reformist, not millenialist. Like the other reformists, Gerhoch of Reichersberg and Hildegard of Bingen, Joachim looked forward to the coming of a thoroughly reformed, holy church to be achieved in the near future by reform of the episcopate and the clergy. The status of the Holy Spirit was the culmination of the preceding status, not a radically new beginning. Apocalypticism in both its reformist and in its imperialist versions was part of the mainstream, despite the efforts of the schoolmen to suppress it. The author also sheds significant new light on apocalyptic thinking in the mid-fourteenth century with a thorough analysis of Henry of Kirkstede's vade mecum, Cambridge Corpus Christi 404 and his first edition of Henry's De antichristo et de fine mundi. This study, and three others, are published here for the first time.

Joachim of Fiore (c.1135-1202) remains one of the most fascinating and enigmatic figures of medieval Christianity. In his own time, he was an influential advisor to the mighty and powerful, widely respected for his prophetic exegesis and decoding of the apocalypse. In modern times, many thinkers, from Thomas Müntzer to Friedrich Engels, have hailed him as a prophet of progress and revolution. Even present-day theologians, philosophers and novelists were inspired by Joachim’s vision of a Third Age of the Holy Spirit. However, at no time was Joachim an uncontroversial figure. Soon after his death, the church authorities became suspicious about the explosive potential of his theology, while more recently historians held him accountable for the fateful progressivism of Western Civilization. Joachim of Fiore and the Influence of Inspiration. Essays in Memory of Marjorie E. Reeves (1905-2003) is a title that is deliberately reminiscent of the title of Marjorie Reeves’ opus magnum: her book ’The Influence of Prophecy in the Later Middle Ages’ has been fundamental in the field of Joachimist studies from its publication in 1969 right up until today. The present volume is inspired both by Joachim of Fiore’s lasting influence, which can be found in many places from the early thirteenth century until postmodern times, and by Marjorie Reeves’s unsurpassed scholarly achievements and her inspiring personality. British, Continental and American scholars of several generations, from different academic disciplines, follow the paths she has opened, try to answer questions she was the first to ask, offer new insights and new texts in state of the art editions, immersing themselves deeply into materials Marjorie Reeves had provided us with in the field of Joachimism and the influence of prophecy. The volume is divided into three parts. In the first, the studies shed new light on different aspects of Joachim of Fiore’s life and work. The second and third parts are dedicated to Joachim’s afterlife -- with the contemporary and late medieval reception of Joachim’s thought in the Iberian Peninsula, England, and Provence, and then on on Joachim’s Wirkungsgeschichte in early modern England and Germany.

Part One considers key philosophical and aesthetic evaluations of literary images and symbols. The power of pictures is widely appreciated, as in the adage 'a picture is worth a thousand words'. Sometimes Christian discourse can be smothered by endless prose, which demands much inferential reasoning. There is, however, a contrary argument. An isolated visual representation can be misleading if it is improperly interpreted. For example, some mystical visions are interpreted as direct instructions from the Holy Spirit, as happened with the Radical Reformers, who advocated the Peasants’ Revolt. Hence theories of symbol, metaphor, and visual representation must be examined Part Two discusses visual representation in the Old Testament, the teaching of Jesus, pictures and analogies in Paul, and the Book of Revelation. This shows the range of authentic visual representations. In contrast to biblical material, we find throughout Christian history abundant examples of misleading imagery which is often passed off as Christian. A notorious example is found in the visual representation and metaphors used by Gnostic writers. Almost as bad are some visual representations used by the medieval mystics, Radical Reformers, and extreme charismatics – all of which lack valid criteria of interpretation, relying instead on subjective conviction. Similarly, sermons and prayers today can be enriched with pictorial images, but some can be misleading and unhelpful for the life of the Church.

The Book of Revelation has fired the imaginations of theologians, preachers, artists, and ordinary Christians across the centuries. The resulting number of commentaries on the book is enormous, and most studies can only touch upon, at most, a representative sample of this vast literature. As a consequence, many focus largely on the interpretation of the Apocalypse only within specific periods, such as the patristic period or during the Reformation. One result of this severe limitation given the vast literary corpus is how historical interpretations in critical commentaries of the Book of Revelations tend to prioritize authors from the modern period. What has been the fate of Christianity since Nietzsche's famous announcement of the "death of God"? What is the possibility of religion, specifically Christianity, thriving in our postmodern era? In this provocative new book, Gianni Vattimo, leading Italian philosopher, politician, and framer of the European constitution, addresses these critical questions. When Vattimo was asked by a former teacher if he still believed in God, his reply was, "Well, I believe that I believe." This paradoxical declaration of faith serves as the foundation for a brilliant exposition on Christianity in the new millennium—an age characterized by a deep uncertainty of opinion—and a personal account of how Vattimo himself recovered his faith through Nietzsche and Heidegger. He first argues that secularization is in fact the fulfillment of the central Christian message, and prepares us for a new mode of Christianity. He then explains that Nietzsche's thesis concerns only the "moral god" and leaves room for the emergence of "new gods."
