Knowledge Based Dynamic Capabilities

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book provides a knowledge-based view to the dynamic capabilities in an organization. The author integrates two existing views on gaining competitive advantage: the Knowledge View which suggests that the capability of organizations to learn faster than competitors is the only source of competitiveness; and the Dynamic Capability View which speculates that a firm’s competitive advantage rests on dynamic capabilities which enable a firm to constantly renew the stock of ordinary organizational capabilities in accordance with the changes in the business environment. Using the IT sector in India as a case study, this book provides and tests a new framework--Knowledge-Based Dynamic Capabilities—in the prediction of competitive advantage in organizations.

Dynamic Capabilities

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The concept of dynamic capabilities, especially in terms of organizational knowledge processes, has become the predominant paradigm for the explanation of competitive advantages. However, major unsolved - or at least insufficiently solved - problems are first their measurement and second their management by concrete managerial options, such as design options of organizational structures. Dynamic Capabilities provides an integrated descriptive model of both dynamic capabilities and organizational structures that allows characterizing, classifying and a comparison. It develops a logic system of a multitude of combinatorial possibilities between their variables, and it develops a complex and integrated system of associated empirically based and qualitatively deduced hypotheses. Therewith, it serves as a terminological and analytical foundation for the identification of knowledge-based dynamic capabilities in organizations and for a targeted design of organizational structures that enable and foster dynamic capability processes such as knowledge transfer and knowledge absorption.

Essentials On Dynamic Capabilities For A Contemporary World

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book is about dynamic capabilities (DCs) in the context of the 21st century, in which global challenges seem to come from different quadrants. For instance, an environmental threat to the planet ́s sustainability, or technological advancements disrupting the traditional value chains call for new business models accompanying societal trends. Although the usual approach in dealing with these business models is from a competitiveness perspective, the editors of this book avoid it as the approach seems reductive of what the organizations are required to be aware of and cope with in the modern world only to their organizational ecosystems. The book offers a compilation of studies on dynamic capabilities covering both cognitive and non-cognitive DCs, according to the managerial and leadership aspects of technological capabilities. Each chapter obeys a certain order, within a particular category of DCs, and their reading along the book is telling a story, showing seminal DCs that a company cannot neglect in the current world. Their grouping also is structured in one way that one might be a preparatory reading for another. Researchers working on the dynamic capabilities approach will particularly benefit from the discussions provided within this book.

Knowledge Engineering

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Knowledge management is far-reaching. It can dramatically reduce costs such as costs of office work repetition, human resource retirement, information reuse, etc. Rather than "reinventing the wheel" and having it be a costly and inefficient activity, systematic reuse of knowledge can show substantial cost benefits immediately. This book shows how to develop process-oriented methodologies, covers both interorganizational and enterprises models, discusses how knowledge management can dramatically reduce costs and increase speed of response, presents a wide range of quantitative methods applied to various knowledge engineering problems, and offers several graphical presentations of models and processes. Academicians and practitioners in the area of knowledge management and engineering, especially managers in industries will fine this book useful. The material might also be useful in knowledge management graduate studies.

Robust Manufacturing Control

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This contributed volume collects research papers, presented at the CIRP Sponsored Conference Robust Manufacturing Control: Innovative and Interdisciplinary Approaches for Global Networks (RoMaC 2012, Jacobs University, Bremen, Germany, June 18th-20th 2012). These research papers present the latest developments and new ideas focusing on robust manufacturing control for global networks. Today, Global Production Networks (i.e. the nexus of interconnected material and information flows through which products and services are manufactured, assembled and distributed) are confronted with and expected to adapt to: sudden and unpredictable large-scale changes of important parameters which are occurring more and more frequently, event propagation in networks with high degree of interconnectivity which leads to unforeseen fluctuations, and non-equilibrium states which increasingly characterize daily business. These multi-scale changes deeply influence logistic target achievement and call for robust planning and control strategies. Therefore, understanding the cause and effects of multi-scale changes in production networks is of major interest. New methodological approaches from different science disciplines are promising to contribute to a new level comprehension of network processes. Unconventional methods from biology, perturbation ecology or auditory display are gaining increasing importance as they are confronted with similar challenges. Advancements from the classical disciplines such as mathematics, physics and engineering are also becoming of continuing importance.

The Relationship Between Knowledge Transfer Team Learning And Project Success In The Information Technology Field

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Project management is a growing field, and is expanding to more industries; however, it still faces the same challenges it did decades ago. There is a lack of understanding and recognition of how knowledge is shared and how knowledge sharing can help project teams accomplish successful outcomes. Without knowledge transfer and sharing, organizations fail to continue practices that worked well and fail to discontinue those that resulted in errors or rework. The research presented in this book builds on the theories of organizational learning, knowledge management, and dynamic capabilities. Data was obtained through a quantitative survey from project professionals working on information technology (IT) projects in the United States. The goal of this study was to gain an understanding of the influence of knowledge transfer in IT projects that contributes to project success. Results and conclusions should be of benefit to project managers in all industries.

The Nature Of The New Firm

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The emerging knowledge economy is prompting decisive changes in the organization of business firms. Corporate hierarchies flatten under the impact of ICT and the need to delegate decision rights. The boundaries of the firm shrink under the impact of outsourcing and viable relational contracting. However, we still know very little about the mechanics and manifestations of this process. Killian McCarthy, Maya Fiolet, and Wilfred Dolfsma s The Nature of the New Firm breaks new ground in our understanding of changing economic organization. It will appeal not only to theorists of the firm, but also to management scholars and sociologists interested in organization. Nicolai J. Foss, Copenhagen Business School, Denmark The Nature of the New Firm presents a number of studies on the blurring of boundaries within and between organizations and institutions. Globalization has created new ways of doing business, new institutions to oversee them, and has introduced a spectrum of new protagonists to the international arena. Scholars and practitioners have been challenged by the evolving environment to find new ways to interact and, in the process, many of the traditional boundaries that have existed within and between organizations and institutions have become increasingly blurred. This unique compendium sheds light on these and other topics on the question of change, both within and between organizations and institutions. The contributors have expertly combined the insights of some of the biggest names in the fields of economics, business and strategic management, both present and future and in doing so offer scholars a tailor-made, up-to-date study on the topic of economic change. This book will prove to be a compelling read for students, scholars and policymakers of international business, industrial organization and strategy.
