Latinx Cin In The Twenty First Century

BOOK EXCERPT:

Today’s Latinx motion pictures are built on the struggles—and victories—of prior decades. Earlier filmmakers threw open doors and cleared new paths for those of the twenty-first century to willfully reconstruct Latinx epics as well as the daily tragedies and triumphs of Latinx lives. Twenty-first-century Latinx film offers much to celebrate, but as noted pop culture critic Frederick Luis Aldama writes, there’s still room to be purposefully critical. In Latinx Ciné in the Twenty-First Century contributors offer groundbreaking scholarship that does both, bringing together a comprehensive presentation of contemporary film and filmmakers from all corners of Latinx culture. The book’s seven sections cover production techniques and evolving genres, profile those behind and in front of the camera, and explore the distribution and consumption of contemporary Latinx films. Chapters delve into issues that are timely, relevant, and influential, including representation or the lack thereof, identity and stereotypes, hybridity, immigration and detention, historical recuperation, and historical amnesia. With its capacious range and depth of vision, this timeless volume of cutting-edge scholarship blazes new paths in understanding the full complexities of twenty-first century Latinx filmmaking. "This book surveys the history of Latina and Latino depictions, narratives, and authorship in U.S. English-language television since the 1950s, with a focus on the navigations and impact of Latina/o series writers and creators as they have been able to enter the industrial landscape in recent decades. Based on archival research, interviews with dozens of media professionals who worked on or performed in these series, textual analysis of available episodes and promotional materials, and analysis of news media coverage, the chapters examine Latina/o representation in children's television Westerns in the 1950s, in Chicana/o and Puerto Rican activist-led public affairs series in the 1970s, in sitcoms from the 1970s through the 2010s, including many considered "failed," and in Latina and Latino-led series in the 2000s and 2010s on broadcast, cable, and streaming outlets, including George Lopez, Ugly Betty, One Day at a Time, and Vida. These series and their creators and writers are explored in relation to the social and political contexts of these junctures in U.S. and Latina/o history and to the evolving industry with respect to whether Latina/o creatives were allowed entrée and to the cultural climate for writers and other creative professionals working in television development and production. As such, it also highlights how television has been key to both the marginalization and to the incremental growth of Latina/o cultural citizenship in the United States, as well as how Latina/o creative professionals are gaining numbers and agency within the television industry and are continuing to push to be able to produce and share their stories"--

Latin America In The Twenty First Century

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The myriad changes affecting contemporary Latin America in the context of a globalizing world are so far reaching, argue the authors of Latin America in the Twenty-First Century, that understanding them requires both new conceptual tools and multidisciplinary analysis. In response to this need, they explore developments in the region in terms of four central, distinct processes: the construction of political democracies, social democratization, the reinserting of Latin American economies in the world system, and the creation of a new model of modernity that encompasses both globalization and cultural identities. The authors construct a sociopolitical matrix to help explain Latin America's political, economic, social, and cultural changes in the context of a globalizing world.
